I may be way off, but I have heard that New York city is actually pretty small in comparison to some of the other metropolis areas. Like the smallest big city is that true?

You are way off. New York City is the largest city in the United States and in the top 10 for largest cities in the world. New York City is a huge city, it has almost 10 million people I don't find that small.

In terms of area Jacksonville is larger then Los Angeles, you can't use land area as an example when talking about the size of a city. NYC dwarfs any United States and Canada for that matter city in population.

It could be true. The island of Manhattan is actually really small in size (see maps). The population of New York City and other boroughs Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island are almost 12 milhion people. The it is definitely considerated a bit city.

Some bigger cities than NY:
- Mexico City
- Sao paulo city
- Rio de Janeiro
- New Delhi
-Tokyo
- Shanhai

It seems pretty big to me, if you count all 5 boroughs. Most people think of New York as Manhattan only. Even people in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and SI say "I'm going to the city", when they come to Manhattan. But even Manhattan is pretty huge. It's long and strong, and rises up to the heavens. In terms of magnitude, nothing is bigger than NYC. Nothing gets blown out of proportion more than in NYC. If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere. It's really up to you.

As far as people or land? If you're talking about actual land area, NY is very condensed.

Population wise, it's the 3rd largest metro area in the world (that's NYC, suburbs and nearby Newark included).

It is 468.9 sq mi
Population: 8,214,426 (13th, Mumbai being the largest)

For the amount of people living here in comparison to land mass, yes, its definitely the little big city.
