Why do so many people recommend Beneful when people ask for a good pet food?
now, the first ingredient is the main ingredient...then on down the line.
Also, Corn is EXTREMELY bad for dogs...
yet here is beneful's main ingredients
First ingredient... Ground yellow CORN,
That's the main ingredient!! Next is...
chicken by-product meal , CORN gluten meal, whole wheat flour, (FYI By product as in beaks, feathers, not actual meat)
oh how about these ingredients...
flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid,
or
added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2)
Meat doesn't even play a part in the main ingredients (other than animal digest)... why do people still feed/recommend Beneful as healthy?
why are people so up on Beneful and so down on Blue Buffalo whose main ingredients are...
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Ground Brown Rice
or Innova whose main ingredients are Turkey, Chicken, Chicken meal, so on
explain?

to the "vet"
if you say corn isn't bad for dogs, you need your license revoked if you really are a vet.
As a vet tech I witnessed several dogs DIE from bloat caused by corn and several more get seriously ill from corn.
Corn is not digestable in any form!!!
look at your own poop next time you eat corn. Gross yes... but look.
you'll see whole peices of corn in your poop. Even humans can't digest it.
Its basic knowledge 101 even for a simplet tech like me. So if you're really a vet.. you need to go back to school dude!!
Also, Chiken by products means the Neck, Beak, feat of a chicken and as little feathers as can be avoided (though there will be feathers included) Not just what an animal would eat in the wild. don't know many wolves who eat beaks and talons.
where do you get YOUR info? My god how uninformed you are for a "vet" even the vets I worked with know that much!

If you read the ads for Beneful and believe them, you will thinkt his stuff is great. On top of that, it is made in cutesy shapes that are supposed to look like healthy meat and vegetable products, when, as you know having read the ingredients, it is mostly corn fillers and gruesome by-products.
Beneful is awful, but people don't take the time to look at what's in dog food usually, or they wouldn't feed their dogs ANY supermarket junk. Even Science Diet, which is sold in a lot of vet's offices, is mostly corn meal and garbage by-products.
People think, if their vet sells it, it must be good - not true, the vet gets paid for carrying it.
Always get a good quality dry for your dogs, with meat as the first ingredient - not meat meal, and certainly not corn meal fillers and artificial preservatives that give it the shelf life of plastic.
Canidae is good, there are others just as good, but you will not find them in grocery stores or Walmart - you need to go to a feed store, holistic pet food store, or a big pet store - and even they carry junk.
Read the ingredients folks, cheaper to spend more for quality dry dog food than to pay the vet further down the line when your dog is fat and sick.

Beleive it or not, my dad raised ALL his dogs on Purina dog chow and so they had been all pleasant hunters and lived to their young adults. That was once all he ever bought. I purchase Canidae for mine, however get Purina at cost from a pal that works there, and then I mix the two considering the fact that i would like them to have the great nutrition, however they LOVE the Purina! (don't we all know junk food tastes higher than stuff good for you???) they're going to sincerely prefer out and consume the Purina first and ultimately finish up the rest. I do not think that it's that bad and surely dogs can live to tell the tale simply great on it. If I was on that stranded island i assume i'd eat it too.

Good question! It's amazing and friggin' annoying when people are recommending crap like Beneful, Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Hills Science Diet and all those other grocery store brands.
I also feed my animals Chicken Soup... because it is a good food and because it's available in my area. Price isn't bad either.

People like to think that since their vet tells them to use a certain food, it must be great, when really most vets are just pushing the crappy food they sell.
They think that since Iams and Pedigree and such are large companies with TV Commercials that they MUST be good.
Too bad they dont actually READ the ingredients lists and see what horrible things they are feeding to their dogs.

I can't explain, this baffles me to no end.. I am not sure why people can't see this.. I don't know if they see the commercials and assume that their tv doesn't lie to them, or if they think that cause the dog will eat it, it must be good.. They are forgetting a dog will also eat out of the kitty litter box if that's the case.. If you get good answers that make sense, let me know! I don't think anyone will have one..

First corn is not bad for dogs. Where did you find this? It is a very good source of carbohydrates, which all animals need.
second all dog foods contain animal by-products (organ meat, ect), which is what animals in the wild eat anyway. Tricalcium phosphate is a mineral and a preservative. Beneful also contains artificial dyes so that consumers buy it (it makes it look like it tastes good). Those are of course not necessary, and neither is sorbitol (a sweetener). However foods like beneful are less likely to go rancid because they contain preservatives/vitamin E (which are necessary if you are buying a 40 pound bag of dog food).
Beneful is not a diet I recommend to my clients and patients, it is a candy food and like kibbles n bits is too high in fat.
Lastly, blue buffalo and innova are good diets, however they are exceedingly expensive and contain too many ingredients, and are very high in protein, which can be damaging in large breed growing dogs (can lead to cartilage disorders (since when do dogs need rosemary or flaxseed?). If you want to feed your dog (and cat) healthy diets my recommendation is to avoid foods with fancy shapes and colors with science behind the nutrition, and of course what your Veterinarian recommends to you. Just because a food is homeopathic, organic or whatever does not mean it is better. I have seen and smelled my share of rancid organic dog food. yuk.
Also, most moral veterinarians do not PUSH a certain brand to turn a buck because the company pays us to. That is a very dangerous untruth. Anyone who believes that is fooling themselves and probably doesn't trust their vet. I get no money for selling a certain brand. I recommend certain diets because companies like iams, hills and purina make diets (unlike blue buffalo and innova) for certain diseases and conditions (allergies, kidney failure, liver failure, weight loss, ect). Without these special foods and formulated nutrition i could not provide compete care for my patients. Sure home cooked diets are great, but most people wont do it.
Any store brand or 'specialty' brand that claims that is incorrect. These foods are prescription (key word) only. So, if a company does all this for the benefit of animals, their 'normal' diets are probably just as good if not better than fad diets and brands.
