Works are the physical demonstration of Faith. Faith is the Greek word Pisteos, to believe. Anyone can believe. Faith that saves requires demonstration by an obedient work (not just anything, but obedience to a command). This is why Baptism now saves us ( I Peter 3:21, Acts 2:38, Mk 16:16), since it is not the water or the person baptizing that has the power, but it is the obedience to the command, the heart of the believer. This is also why infants who are baptized have no effect; they have works without faith.
James 2:17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works
>>>
To add a bit, belief itself is called a work -
John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent." Anyone who says we are saved apart from any works we do, really is hamstrung on this passage..... that would mean we do not even need to believe.
Some of the confusion is because Paul speaks about the lack of value in the works of the Law of Moses for salvation, and he calls these "works" generically. But, if you read the passages where Paul condemns "works" you will see every case is also mentioning works of the Law of Moses, such as circumcision, observing days (like Passover), etc

I Cá¹Ì-rin´thi-ans 13 (Love the Crowning Grace) 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

in order to do the works that God really wants, you must have faith, but according to the Bible, only the faith in Jesus will allow us to do good works, without Jesus no matter what we do, we can't ever earn a place in the kingdom of God.
God asks us to have faith in the dead of Jesus and in his resurrection, that He died for our sins, He received the punishment we deserved, because we all have broken the Law of God (the 10 commandments)..

Faith is the cause
Works are the results
Because we have faith, works will follow. It is my our works that we demonstrate our faith.

Faith is a gift from God that gives us a belief in God, combined with an unconditional love for God, inevitably followed by an impulse to do the will of God, resulting in the works of God. Notice the theme? It's all about God.

Good question.
The works that a Christian does by the Holy Spirit are the only one's which have eternal implications. That's why Christians may truly say, "Glory to God," it's God doing them through the believer.
What we need to do is trust Him, and the Spirit moves us to do them.
They are not what many Christians think they are therefore. For many Christians think that they cannot wait on God. They simply don't trust the idea of waiting for God to move them. I think this is especially important at some point in the Christian's life where they are thinking about being in the service of God. They have to decide to trust Him to not send them to heaven bankrupt, and enjoy the benefits that God gives to those who trust Him.

Because of my Faith in GOD, I have no fear to do the Work that he puts before me. For I know that he will complete the work that he starts with me. and in me.
Works are those opportunities to do as he would, every day. I invite him to do these things through me, allowing me to work with the Father. What his teaching does is open my eyes to what he is doing and changes my heart to be more like his. In this fashion, I am drawn closer to him, to be like him.
If it were not for my faith, I would have no works through him.
Nods to Tuberoot.

Faith is complete trust in, and obedience to, Jesus Christ.
Works are outward acts of ritual and adherence to a code to attain merit.
Faith is belief in Jesus Christ, the resurrection, and salvation.
Works are spontaneous acts of love that spring from the fruits of the Spirit.
