Excel has a feature called Conditional Formatting.

Go to the cell that you want to format this way (let's say it's A1).

- from the menu: Format - Conditional Formatting
- first box: Formula Is
- second box: =ISBLANK(A1)
- use the Format button to pick the shading that you want, and OK

- you can also add more conditions, up to 3 total (e.g. shaded red if blank, shaded yellow if 0, etc.)

If there are other cells you want to format this way:
- copy this first cell
- select the other cells to format
- Edit - Paste Special - Formats

If you need more info, add more details or e-mail.
Cheers.
