DRIVE DEFENSIVE ALL THE TIME AND FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD NO MATTER WHAT.

That is denial of personal safety responsibility. However, telling somebody else that will probably not be very motivating. Instead, it might be more motivating to remind the driver that they are not alone on the road. They could be very safe, but be hit by somebody who is not. I was in such an accident while driving safely to a wedding. I had valid license, insurance, inspection, and registration. I was driving the speed limit and had a green light to cross Main Street. A teenager learning to drive did not see the red light and plowed his parents' SUV into my '72 Chevy Nova. My car was totalled, my face was sprayed with shattered glass, and I had to get not just a ride home, but also a ride to work and money for another car until the other guy's insurance paid up. If I had not worn a seat belt thinking I am a safe driver so "It won't happen to me," I would have been hospitalized for sure. If I was riding a motorcycle I would have been killed. I know, that is just one instance, so here's another.

My parents were in an accident almost 2 years ago that mirrored mine with a truck not stopping, except it was a stop sign instead of a light and he was probably going faster than the kid who hit me. My parents' car got pushed down the road before spinning off to the side (similar to a car-train wreck), and the truck was still going so fast it split a telephone pole into 3 pieces. My parents were Life-Flighted to a hospital in Houston. My mom was there for several weeks, much longer than my dad because my mom was on the passenger side. The "lucky" thing is that even though the truck hit on her side, it hit right behind her seat. She was in critical condition after the truck hit behind her. If it would have actually hit her, it probably would have killed her. I have been in near misses and my parents were in a couple of other accidents.

It does not matter how safe any one of us are, if we are on the road with just 100 other drivers and only 1% of them is a bad driver or just does not see a traffic sign or lot, then there is a risk we can be in an accident. Maybe it won't happen to him or her, but I've heard that before. There is a memorial at my high school covered with at least half a dozen plaques to remember people who probably thought that too.

hmmm, how about these sayings

ride like u own the road, and 1 day, the road will own u

there are old drivers, and bold drivers. but no old and bold drivers.

respect the machine cause it wont respect u.

every season, noobie motorcycle riders find these sayings the hard way. the first 6 months of saddle time to a rookie is typically the most deadly. seems they get cocky 2 or 3 weeks into the season, and make a mistake that the bike doesnt forgive...and it turns out to be fatal. same for car drivers.....they get cocky. and this saying 'it wont happen to me' is a confirmation that this driver is cocky. there isnt a driver alive that HASNT wrecked in some way; fender bender or something a bit more serious. bottom line is, a driver is responsible for ANYONE that happens to ride with him/her. wreck, and someone is gonna be in deep chimchee yanno?

This all depends on who says this sentence. If someone else is saying it, then you should caution the person that they should never let their guard down, when it comes to accidents. Things always happen when you least expect it. And if you mean, "opportunities for me to be able to do such and such will never come, well I have an answer for that also.

I use to dream of owning a horse of my own, and it was many a year before this dream came true. you have to want something bad enought sometimes for things to happen. I now have my horse, now I want to own a country home so I wont have to rent the space my horse is on. I believe this too will come true. its only a matter of time. Dont give up hope. If you want it, it will come.

As I write this I am in a head, neck, and body brace having broken my neck in an accident. I have had a clean driving record for 35 years and was forced off the road by someone who didn't know how to enter a highway correctly. It can happen to anyone.

Deal with it by eliminating it from what you think and say. Drive as if anything could happen to you, it'll make you a better, safer, more considerate driver. Replace the saying with "Always be prepared for anything, 'cause anything could happen to me."

Yeah, but unfortunatly you have to share the road with some of the worst drivers on earth.

You should never say that. It will haunt you later. For example, people that talk with their mouth full and say they won't choke...it won't happen to me. When it does happen some learn from that and eat their words and some just think it was a one time thing and it won't happen again. Anything can happen to you like everyone else. People need to be careful when using that phrase because it can happen to you.

I believe people shouldnt think that way..If we spent more time thinking about other things such as: "Whats this weekend?", " Is Mom going to cook Spaghetti tonight?"

What Im trying to say is, stop thinking "It wont happen" and think what is happening now.

That always angers me when I hear some one say that. They are simply in denial. My wife is the biggist fan of that saying. She smokes and I tell her I want her to quit and she always replies with, "it's not my Karma, my grandma smoked into her 90s and it didn't kill her". It makes me sick.
