I accidently went to the shower today with my contacts in and no great harm came from it, nothing is hurting, no chemical reaction took place in my eye. Sowhy?

Water breaks down contacts and drys them out. Also it contains so much bacteria, which can cause serious infecions. Showering in your contacts isnt as bad as wearing your contacts in a pool or hot tub. Just keep the water out of your eyes and dont rub them.

It's not that water is such a bad thing. What happens is that the contacts "dry out" and stick to the eyes. A little water won't do any harm, though. I've taken showers while wearing contact lenses, too. I just try not to let too much water get into my eyes.

Water is not sterile. If you could see through a microscope, you would be shocked at the number of critters swimming around in tap water.

I think my optician said that bacteria in the water clings to the contacts to you just end up having loads of bacteria in your eye.
I'm not really sure though because I wasn't really listening to her...
