Vonnage and similar carriers use the Internet for transport and use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

The major problem with ALL carriers using the Internet for transport is that they cannot assure voice quality because the Internet is not designed to do this. For VoIP to provide suitable quality, voice packets need to be marked so they can be distinguished from data packets and be given priority handling. Should there be congestion (and this happens), the voice packets must be handled first or you will have voice quality issues. The Internet is not designed to provide priority marking and priority handling and it does not provide the needed priority to voice packets. This is why no carrier using the internet for transport can assure quality.

I am sure other readers will indicate their service has been favorable. Give them time and the story will change.

VoIP carriers state that a bigger capacity Internet feed will resolve the problem. In fact it will not.

Having said this, for any of these carriers to work you must have a high speed Internet connection, at least 512 Kbps minimum. Because you live in a rural area, it is not likely you can get DSL or CATV so you will have to run a T1 for this purpose. The cost for the T1 makes a voice land line very cheap in comparison. I recommend you put in a traditional land line.

to have vonage or skype with is the same type of service, you need a working landline, for the internet to operate over. other way is to see if another mobile operator has better coverage in your area. try this site, yor can search your area to see who covers you.

Vonage is telephone over internet. This only works if you have highspeed internet such as Cable or DSL.

It's voice over Internet. Unless you have a reliable high speed internet connection (like 3+ MBPS), it won't work well for you.
