Right on Sentinel! :)

Jesus loved all the disciples. He loved them all equally, just as He loves us all equally. So why say that John was "the disciple whom Jesus loved"?

I read this a long time ago and it helped me a great deal to understand what it meant:

"John and James, Andrew and Peter, with Philip, Nathanael, and Matthew, had been more closely connected with Him than the others and had witnessed more of His miracles. Peter, James, and John stood in still nearer relationship to Him. They were almost constantly with Him, witnessing His miracles, and hearing His words. John pressed into still closer intimacy with Jesus, so that he is distinguished as the one whom Jesus loved. The Saviour loved them all, but John's was the most receptive spirit. He was younger than the others, and with more of the child's confiding trust he opened his heart to Jesus. Thus he came more into sympathy with Christ, and through him the Saviour's deepest spiritual teaching was communicated to His people."

John the youngest of the Apostles is the disciple that Jesus loved and this was becauseJohn had an inner trust that Jesus was the Messiah and he lived on every word Jesus spoke,John proved his intense loyalty to Jesus when he stood at the foot of the cross when the other Apostles fled from fear.

Usually considered to be John. Also called St. John the Divine. He was the youngest of the disciples and was probably a teenager when Jesus was executed. That's why he was around so much longer than the others.

History records this disciple to be John. He was the John who wrote the Gospel, 1st-3rd John and the book of Revelation.

He was tho only one of the twelve to remain with Jesus as He was crucified. He was given the special job of looking after Mary. He and his brother were known as the sons of thunder. They wanted to sit at Jesus' right and left when He came into His Kingdom. They asked their mother to approach Jesus about that.

At the end of his gospel, he reports that Jesus re-instated Peter after denying Him. Peter asked what would happen to John. Jesus replied that even if John were still alive on His return to earth, it was basically, none of Peters' business.

The funny thing is; as an old man, John was given a glimpse into the future. Jesus told him about the events surrounding His return. but John died, and is now in heaven.

He tells us in the last few verses of John, when Peter asks what will happen to this disciple and Jesus says it doesn't matter. John says that "This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. " (John 21:24) It was John. and he's a fast runner (John 20:4)

Jesus loved everybody equally but John refers to himself as the apostle that Jesus loved because at crucifixion Jesus said to him "behold your mother" and woman "behold your son". Mary is believed to have spent the rest of her life with John.
At the transfiguration Jesus had taken the three (Peter ,James and John) up the mountain because they were closer to Him than the rest.

John uses this in his gospel. He is talking about himself. That's how he refers to himself.

Yes - it is John the Beloved
