THE WORD "boneless" MEANS WITHOUT BONE.
THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT A DENTIST CAN PRESCRIBE FOR YOU TO STOP THE GRINDING.
NIGHT GUARDS CANNOT DO THIS.
YOUR DENTIST MUST MAKE YOU AN N.T.I. BRUXISM APPPLIANCE TO WEAR WHENYOU SLEEP.

To a hospital? I get the feeling he wants some pictures of your jaw alignment and the condoyle's. This is a good diagnostic tool imperative to correctly treat jaw and bite conditionds. However these can be missinterpited, distorted and incorrectly aligned.
look for a tmj, oralfaxial, facial specialty that uses a advanced and specific x-ray unit that is a scanner
and multi dementional.
Correct diagnosis can not be done by feel. the area of concern will be apparent only with addequate x-rays.
Many things contribute to the mouth that are not inside it.Educate yourself about how your body works, ask for explanations pamplets and follow through with the requests of your Dr.
Also boneloss might be refering to the bone loss in the condoyle area(the joint or hinge of your upper and lower jaw) Once again ask for education on the matter,a good provider will be able and happy to educate a patient about the condition of concern.

I have read the other answers and they seem far more converse than me. All I want to say is, that in the Dental Hospital you have wonderful treatment. I can say that in truth because my teeth have been a problem to me all of my life. So you will be in the best hands with the best people for the job if you have to have any work done after the Xray.
Good Luck

Grinding your teeth at night can cause TMJ commonly known as lockjaw. The reason for the X-ray is most likely to determine if any damage has been done to the jaw bone due to repeated grinding at night. Most likely you will be perscribed a mouth guard to wear at night to reduce the impact and force on your teeth and jaw.

Hospitals have xray type machines that most dental offices do not have due to size, price, etc. Most Cat scan type xrays are done out of office. I-Cat scans used for implant surgery is one example. They take xrays of your jaw and scull instead of just teeth. No big deal.
