One of the things I liked about Milton Freedman is his simple explanation of protective tariffs.
When one country restricts or places a tariff on products from another country they are in fact increasing the cost of that and all related items.

Limiting the number of Toyotas that can be imported effectively raised the cost of every car sold in the U.S. by $2000.
Free trade is the simplest way to balance things out.
No country will stand an imbalance for long before they either start importing more goods or selling more goods.

If you only export goods you have to get rid of the extra money.
If you only import goods you have got to be exporting something or you will run out of money.
