In John 19 when Jesus is about to be crucified, Pilate says he has the authority to decide if Jesus would be crucified or not. How come he never let him go if he had that authority? I am a Christian, and I know Christ had to die for us. But I'm confused and would like more on the topic so I can understand my pastor's sermons all the more better. Thanks in advance! :]

Read verse 11 Jesus told him the only power Pilate had was the power given to him from above in other words it was God will to be done and not anyone elses.

Pilate was in a very precarious position with the Emperor due to former rioting in Jerusalem which he instigated,Caesar wanted peace and the taxes due to him and internal warring in Jerusalem was not something he relished.
The high Priest and his cohorts threatened to report Pilate to the emperor on the basis that Pilate was against him by allowing Jesus to proclaim he was King of Israel, which Jesus never actually did.
The Jewish Sanhedrin had Pilate over a barrel and he knew it,so it was either release this innocent man or be recalled to Rome by the Emperor and demoted or worse.

Historically speaking, Pilate had absolute authority over the Province. He was the Govenor, appointed by Rome and could do anything he wanted.

Having said that, he did have to be smart, and pay at least some respect to local customs to avoid sparking a revolt.

Did he have a reason to let him go?

With such political pressure to crucify him, why should he let Jesus go?
