Yeah see where you are coming from.
A mentally ill person is more likely to harm themselves or attract the wrong attention and become a victim of violent crime, because they are ill that a well person.
The press, film industry and the ignorance of the majority of the public only make this worse.

I am not so certain about that. We do have lock ups for the criminally insane.... They are filled with mentally ill people who are violent. But, act out onto others, not themselves. Society tolerates acting out on oneself more then others... The mentally well offenders are the ones who are under the influence or are intoxicated.

It is statistically true that those diagnosed with mentally illnesses are no more or less likely to commit crimes than the general population - the percentages are the same.

Yes, but they do most of it when they are drunk. And we already lock up the drunks so they can sleep it off so its already taken care of.

Mind you, there are also a few dangerous nutters out there but that doesn't mean people with a mental illness are all dangerous.

We can't honestly answer that because most criminals have never been seen by a psychiatrist prior to the crimes. I believe that many more criminals are mentally ill and have some schizophrenic or bipolar tendencies. I'm not absolving these people because people can still function in society despite having a mental disorder, but yes many criminals probably do have some type of mental disorder that was never diagnosed or treated.

It depends what you mean by mentally ill. People that commit violent crimes are not normal, they are usually socially inadequate losers, or hooked on drugs and alcohol and unable to fit into society.
