I do not try to get people to stop believing. In many cases I think it could damage a person who is sincere. I personally am an atheist because I see no evidence of supernatural action in the world. I guess I am a naturalist in some sense.

I doubt if most of the atheists, at least the serious ones actually care about what you believe. They only care that you do not try making it into law for everybody to believe as you do. They have good reasons to fear that is being attempted, and they have plenty of evidence that their fears are justified.
They don't believe in God for reasons that are based in logic and because they have no evidence that God exists. They are quite right about those points too.
There is no evidence to offer them except for our belief that we are right. In this we are only basing our claims on faith because we have no evidence or solid reasoning to support our claims that God exists either. That is why it is a faith.
That is also why the Satanic practise of having individual thoughts must be stamped out among us.

The fewer people that believe, "The End of the World is coming and the only way to deal with it is to get right with the Lord!!" the better. We need to look at the problems this planet is facing with a rational, realistic, fact based perspective if we are going to survive as a species. If too many believers just give up and wait for their deity (in whatever form) to fix things in some magical promised land, then we are all doomed.

Most atheists who question people's faith don't do so as a way to make them atheists. They mostly do it as a means to promote independent thought. For example, is a person is religious and has their reasons for it, atheists will leave them alone and let them have their faith. But many on here only follow whatever their religion tells them and don't think for themselves. Those are the ones most targeted by atheists.

You ask two questions, but I see the same answer will do for both. It's about faith as a reason to believe. Faith is generally defined as belief in the absence of evidence, or even in the face of evidence to the contrary. In fact, we would not accept such a standard of belief anywhere except in religion. But I contend we can no longer accept it in religion, either, because of the impact it has on the believer, and on the culture in which the believer acts.
The main problem in America is fundamentalist Christianity. The main problem on the other side of the world is fundamentalist Muslims. In both cases, faith causes them to behave in irrational ways, against their own self-interest, especially suicide bombers, and against the interests of others, especially introducing legislation that violates our Constitutional rights.
You see, if someone really believes, if they really do have faith, there are certain consequences which can be very bad for the rest of us. So it's not so much that I want to convince you to stop believing what you believe, but to stop acting on it in ways that are detrimental to other people. However, if you really do believe that you have The Truth, and that Truth compels you to interfere with me and others who don't want your interferance (laws against gays, against abortion, against modern science in public schools), then I am forced to conclude that the only way to get you to stop being a hazard to our rights is to convince you that what you have assumed to be Truth is in fact false.
Self-interest and in the interests of the nation and the world.

If your belief can't stand up to questioning it.You don't have much of a belief anyway. Why would it be bad to question your beliefs?I do.Christians don't stop with "believing god and his laws"They want me to believe an unbelievable story. They want monuments commanding me to worship THEIR god put in public places. They make the US the laughingstock of the world with the silly creation museum and attempts to insert creationism, despite it not even being a coherent theory, and zero evidence for it,taught in the classroom. They perpetuate lies, constantly, ironically to spread their "truth"Why do I not believe in god?If you grew up without it put in your head as a child, would YOU believe a magic man made some playdo and breathed life into it?That snakes talk? That donkeys talk? That a god impregnated a woman with himslf,to sacrifice to himself, because eve listened to a talking snake?and because she did,we are all sinners who deserve eternity of torment unless we get washed in godblood?Does that sound even remotely believable to a 5 year old. It's a silly ridiculous story.I find it sad that people believe such nonsense. But the main thing is christians don't just want to believe in god. They want everyone to believe, even though different Christian churches preach different messages. No,christians aren't interested in just keeping their faith. They were in power 1600 years or so.They actually made MANUALS on how to properly torture people into confessing god. They must never be given a foothold on power again

Why is so bad to let some of you have faith? Well because those of you can't keep it to themselves and go putting your beliefs on my money, my schools, my court houses... Maybe you don't push it down our throats, but perhaps your children might, or your children's children.
It has been noted through history that religion needs to spread, needs believers and lots of money (which apparently no god can handle well enough that it always requires more).
Main reson for atheism? Common sense and logic.

The Reverend Soleil said it right.
The less ignorant beings on the planet, the better for all of us. I think we could ALL benefit from a lack of religious persecution, jihads, inquisitions, crusades, etc.
I don't believe in god for the same reasons I don't believe in Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny. Logic, reason, implausibility.

I'm with Rev Sol. I am interested in helping people THINK. It has nothing to do with whether God is real or not. It has to do with not blindly following what somebody else tells you. It has to do with thinking for yourself. If everyone would do that, we would have gotten rid of religion a long time ago.
To answer the second part of your question, the reason I don't believe is because there is no evidence that compels me to do so.

You have people like George W. Bush who started a war because he believes a God told him to do so. And people voted for him because he is a Christian. You have other people who hate atheists and homosexuals merely because the Bible tells them to.
I don't believe in gods because you cannot explain the origin of complexity with a prior greater complexity.
