The term "persecution" derives from the vocabulary of religion and was used to describe the torture and torments inflicted on the early Christians martyrs. In everyday usage, it characterizes all relationships in which one party, the persecutor, pursues the other, the persecuted, with malevolent intentions, cruelty, and hatefulness.
These days persecution can include almost anything, religion, ethnic type, gender, sexual preference, poliical preferences etc.
I was persecuted big time as a kid for being an immigrant so I know what it's all about.

My definition of persecution would read something like this:
The act, based on conscious decision, of bringing harm or hardship to another based solely on a single aspect of their existence.
As an example:
To me, the use of "racial slurs" is not persecution - it is distasteful and insensitive, but it's not severe enough to be labeled persecution... violent racial hate-crimes, however, are definitely a form of persecution.
And yes, I have suffered persecution... once.
At the hands of schoolmates (members of the high school club Fellowship of Christian Athletes) who were interested in 'saving me from myself' -- since I would not cave to their peer-pressure conversion tactics, they joined together and beat me until the fight was interrupted by school officials.
I have had several other instances in my life that others have called persecution - but for me, this was the only true instance.

Like being jailed or killed simply for being a Christian; being harrassed or abused by non-Christians.
The former is mostly experienced in 3rd-world nations; the latter is experienced more in the industrialized nations.
I feel that I am persecuted whenever I peacefully demonstrate against abortion in front of a Planned Parenthood clinic, and those "peaceful" liberals try to run up onto the sidewalk to run me over. They yell, "Get a life", when I am only trying to ensure that the baby "gets a life".

I don't know how I would define it, maybe I'll copy sho-nuff...never been persecuted, or at least I couldn't tell. I am a white suburban male with a great family, friends and job. If I started shouting persecution, it would probably sound more like whining...

1.
- to harass or punish in a manner designated to injure, grieve, or afflict
- to cause to suffer because of belief
2. to annoy with persistent or urgent approaches ( as attacks, pleas, or importunities )
It is pestering.
I can hardly say that I have been persecuted for defending Christianity compared to what my Lord and Savior had to go through for my salvation.
I am confronting people with hard issues time to time, but I believe in personal free will within God's limits and I also believe in God's righteous judgment.

It is when a person, or group of people go out of their way to make your life miserable.
I've never experienced it.
People would have to be pretty sad to waste their lives trying to make you miserable.
