My former father-in-law is in a local hospital in critical condition. He lives about 1 1/2 hours from here. So I told his lady friend that she could stay with me so she could be with him. Now, I learned that my father is in the hospital and they think he has had a heart attact. He is almost 2 hours away. I would really like to go be with my dad. What can I do about this lady? She is elderly. She does not drive. Even if I let her stay while I went, she could not get back and forth to the hospital.

This where volunteers come into play. If you go to church call your pastor right away and explain your situation. If not there is usually a shuttle service in every city for the elderly or those who can't drive. Find that service. The best place to call first if you can't find anything in the phone book is your local ER's. If they don't know call the salvation army, or a place the house's handicapped people.

See if your neighbors won't check in on her every now and then and make sure you leave all your neighbors phone numbers and the phone number of where you will be.

Most ambulance services offer things like this too, so you might want call them and see if they have a pick up and drop of service for the elderly to get to appointments and such. Also nursing homes use these services too so they would know.

Good luck.

What a kind soul you are. You do need to go be with your dad. Is it possible to have a friend come stay and "housesit" for you? Another option would be to call the county or city gov't where you live and see what types of services they offer. It may be that they have some service offering transportation to elderly or disabled people. Good luck, I hope your dad is okay.

Your father needs you, go to be with him. She can find another way to get back and forth from the hospital. You are doing her a favor already by letting her stay with you.

You need to level with her and tell her that you need to take her back to where she lives.
It was nice to offer for her to stay with you for a couple of days while your dad gets things straightened out... a day or two is one thing, but taking her in on an ongoing basis is not what you bargained for.
She is not an equal adult who is independent.
You are not running a retirement home, nor a taxi service.
You cannot take responsibility for her care.
I see this as a liability.

There is nothing wrong with feeling overwhelmed. You are. And you need to be with your father. You should contact your area social services to see how they can help. They may be able to find temporary housing for your Former F-in-L's friend.

Alternately, can she go with you to see your father?

Good Luck.

Go be with your dad. Do you have a friend nearby that could drive her around? Does she have someone that could pick her up and drive her around? If not, she may just have to "sit and wait". Your dad comes first, you can only do so much.

see if any other family member will help out, or you could drop her at the hospital with step dad while you go see your dad.
