I Have a Dawes Accent mountain bike I can not get top gear, I have tried to adjust the derraileur with the hi and low screws and adjust the cable tenshion, the derraileur is sitting on a small notch (looks like it is there to do this) and the spring seems to be working.

could this be due to a worn component?

You could have a bent derraileur hanger (The piece of metal between the derraileur and the frame). Take a look at the derrail. from a step or two behind the bike and see if anything is out of alignment. (There's a tool to measure this but it's $75)
If it's bent:
Grab the derail. with a hand and press it back towards the spokes a little at a time and see what happens.

It's really hard to say what's up. Did this happen all of a sudden? Unlikely it's due to wear. Derailleurs can last a long time. You may have damaged or bent the hanger (most likely) It would be difficult to explain the many things to do and look for. Try this: sheldonbrown.com - there is tons of info here and diagrams etc. too.

I had the same problem with the derailleur on an old bicycle - couldn't get it to go to the top gear. I think derailleurs bend with age due to metal fatigue. There's nothing you can do about that.

I snapped the two bones in the two forearms in a airborne dirt and dirt bike crash approximately 10 years in the past. My bike bogged out on the bounce, so it did no longer propel me all a thank you to the landing ramp. nostril-wheel hit the returned of the landing ramp, so I went from 30mph to 0mph in 0 feet. I braced for consequence by ability of clutching the grips tight, which finally become what made my hands snap. Left hand touched my left elbow at one element (which i'm oddly happy with). outstanding forearm become at a ninety degree attitude. looked like i had 2 elbows. nevertheless provides me the heebie geebies thinking approximately it lol

Go to a bike shop and ask them to check the hanger. I work in a bike shop and if i have trouble setting up the gears (unless its clearly battered up) usually bending the hanger back gets them working. Good luck!

Brian,

If you live in the Stockton area and haven't already fixed your derailleur problem I'd be more than happy to take a look at it for you at no cost. I am one of the better mechanics in town and you can't beat my prices (free).

it could be that, or the shifter cable could be broken. That's what happened to me. Costs around $10 to replace.
