I am not a doctor but I have enough experience to be qualified to answer your question.

YES, 12 tablets of prednisone all together in one time is okay as your doctor prescribed.

Anyway, the dosages of prednisone varies depending on the indications. It can be started at high doses and tapered (lowering the dose gradually) until you will be weaned from the treatment.

For example (note the total dosage):
>>Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma may be prescribed to take 10 tablets (100 mg) by oral route once daily. That would be 1,000 mg in a day. (Imagine how many tablets will be needed if the tablet strength will be less than 100 mg/tablet.Let's say 10 mg tablet = that would require 100 tablets.)

>>Multiple Sclerosis will be given 4 tablets (80 mg) by oral route every other day for 1 month.

>>There are still many conditions that are given high doses or prednisone.

You might be surprised about the number of the tablets that seem to be too many but its not that strange. Be sure to check the strength prescribed as prednisone tablets are available in various strengths ranging from 5 mg - 200 mg. Be sure not to make a mistake and follow the prescribed doses and frequencies. If you feel uneasy taking all at once you may try to bargain with your doctor to take it in 2 divided doses in one day.

( I am a nurse and I always remember waiting to have my patient complete taking 12 tablets of prednisone at once. The tablets are small but there are patients who prefer to take them one at a time.)

P.S.I checked out a link which will be a good reference to check on prednisone's dosages:

How would we know?
A routine dose of prednisone, though, is 1 mg/kg body weight, so if you weigh around 60 kg and have 5 mg tablets, that would be pretty well humdrum.

I'm not a doctor and would not trust this site to answer such a question. If I were concerned with taking a medication, I would call a reputable Pharmacy in your area and ask to speak to a Pharmacist. He should be able to tell you if it is a problem.
