First, you don't need help, your friend does. You have no standing in the case.
Second, hitting someone back is not defending herself. Using the amount of force needed to stop an attack is self defense. Normally in a physical fight (vice the use of weapons such as guns or knives) the accepted self defense position is to run away from the fight.
Third, it is not the job of the police to "help her". I am not sure of what help you expected the police to provide, however I am assuming legal help here and not only is that not their job, it would be a conflict of interest.
Forth, of course she did not go to school, she was in jail. Not sure why you bothered to mention it.
Fifth, "who does she tell" - She really does not need to "tell" anyone. If criminal charges are filed, since she is a minor she will get a defense lawyer appointed to her.

First jhong you should really watch your mouth.Talk about Showing respect? You just disrespected everyone that came in here to read/answer this question. Very rude of you . I am sure your mother would be proud of you. NOT

Now to my answer. I am sorry that your friend had a fight with her grandmother and was arrested. Is this something that happens often? Was the grandmother beating her? or was it a slap to make her stop acting up? I am a firm believer of spanking a child if she is unruly. Timeout works for some and some you need to spank. Dose she live with her grandmother? If so she needs to tell her social worker if she lives with her mom then she need to tell her mom and if that doesn't help then she need to tell a teacher or counselor at school. By law they have to report any suspicion of abuse. All in All you should always respect your elders. Even if you don't like them that much. Good luck to the both of you

if you want to help her, you can post her bond. She can either "tell" her defender or the judge when her case comes around. And why would the police help her?

She shoudl tell teh judge when i tis her trun in court.

If her home situaton is seriously deteriorated, she should tell social services, or ask for help with that at school.
