For laptops with 98, you need to install the CD ROM Drivers for it, should be on a Floppy disc.

Only Me and later always AUTO FIND CDs. Exp with laptops using NON STANDARD IDE controllers.

install all the drivers the laptop came with and you should get there, or try manuf website for updates

Hi, thats odd. Windows 98 usually detects all cd rom drives. You can try going into device manager and scan for any hardware changes. You may also try visiting the cd rom manufacturer's website and check whether 98 supports it. If this laptop originally came with Windows 98 then u might want to try searching for the hardware documentation and drivers that came along with it. Also make sure the cd rom is working. If u have attached more than one cd rom then that may cause a problem. If Windows 98 doesn't work well then try using Ubuntu Linux and if ur hardware doesn't meet requirements then go to Xubuntu.

98 needs drivers loaded to see cds. There used to be floppy disks with the drivers supplied with each cd. This may present a problem if the cd is in any way non-standard as the old drivers will not work correctly. Try booting from the cd, select start dos with cd support. If you can acces the drive from here by typing the drive letter shown (normally D:) you need to set up a cd driver call in config.sys.

I think there's no problem with regards to your O.S.,you should check if your cd rom hardware is still working. If windows doesn't detect it,there be a problem in you cd rom drive and that would need replacing with a new one. Just for safety,maybe you could consult a technician.

Its a common problem with win 98....try found new hardware from control panel and add cd rom drive manually...or else you have to change the operating system...
