The Secret Service has exclusive jurisdiction for investigations involving the counterfeiting of United States obligations and securities.
Social security checks would qualify. Payroll checks and personal checks do not.
If you think nobody does anything about counterfeit currency or counterfeit government checks, why not try an experiment? Scan in a social security check, doctor the details, print off a few hundred of them, and cash them.
We'll be waiting to hear the details of your experiment.

Writing a fake check IS illegal. Do not pay him anything if you don't believe you owe him the money. Do NOT write him a fake check or else he can go to the police and have you arrested! He can sue you in small claims court if he believes you owe the money. Let him sue you. Don't see him or talk to him and tell him you don't owe him anything. A bed is not a proper place to leave a laptop anyway.

I'm not sure this falls under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service. Other law enforcement agencies do work on these scams; however, they concentrate on people who have actually lost money.
The Post Office has a website and commercials warning people about these scams. Getting people to not be greedy and fall for these scams goes a long way to stop them.

The Secret Service is NOT the money police. They do, however, work with online scams. They do work on preventing scams from occurring online, but they can only do so much.

Just be smart when it comes to free money. Odds are it is really to good to be true. Take any checks that seem suspect to your bank and ask them to look into it. Problem is people are lazy and want money now vs. being smart about it. Some sites that can help you out.

cause it harmed you and not the state!! if it would have been 10.000 fake checks in one region, than it weakens the economy and they actually do something.
