I've been out of the service for 15 years, but served active duty in Desert Storm through the Army Nat'l Guard. I recently lost my job a few months ago and have no health insurance. Lately I think I might have symptons that could lead to me being a diabetic. Can anyone tell me what I need to have before I go to the VA hospital. I would hate to make such a long drive and not have what I need. Also...is just serving 180 days active duty in Desert Storm through the Army Nat'l Guard qualify me for this? Thanks!

You will need your DD214. You can actually get the form to apply online here: http://www1.va.gov/health/index.asp and then mail it to the VA facility you wish to use (I would make a copy of the DD214 rather than send the original). I see that someone indicated below that National Guard members are not eligible. The following is a quote from the VA Health Care Eligibility page ( http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/ ):
"Reservists and National Guard members who were called to active duty by a Federal Executive Order may qualify for VA health care benefits."

Look up the number for the Veteran's Administration in your area. You can get a lot of iseful information by phone. You will need your aeparation papers, as in DD-214 and. or your discharge certificate. You will have to fill out a claim to get medical care through the VA and it could take some time to process your claim. The amount of active duty service time requirement would have to be asked of the VA. You may also have a local VA outreach office in your area that can help you with answers and forms.

Slim chance. If you got it on active duty they would treat you but it is an inherited or self induced disease so you are out of luck. Then again it doesn't hurt to try. Go to the VA.GOV web site and find the medical links. Make a couple of phone calls and get the forms you need to fill out. Then wait 12-16 months for an answer. The treatment itself isn't that good but you will save a lot of money in perscriptions if you get approved.

I believe you need to have been honorably discharged form active military duty. don't think National Guard counts. Give the hospital a call they should be able to let you talk to someone. or the va should have a web site you can check. Good LUCK.

yes, you should be qualified. i'm thinking my husband had to have a copy of his dd214. also call ahead, you'll need to be assigned a primary care physician, and it may take months for an appointment. we're fortunate to live in the next town over from a VA hospital, and i still dread going:) good luck.
