Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
Two sequential actions convert solar energy to chemical energy; photolysis, Calvin cycle. This produces food for energy storage. The reaction uses water & carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen, when making sugar. The electron capture occurs in the pigmented chloroplast with sunlight making this a diurnal reaction only.

Respiration releases stored chemical energy for growth and development. C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + ENERGY
Stored sugar and oxygen is used releasing the energy, carbon dioxide, and water. All cells operate with this energy even without sunlight.
They are opposites that work together to take energy from an electron down to a user friendly level.
