My F-I-L got a ticket for not having enough life jackets for the size of the boat (had enough for the people) and he forgot to pay it and a warrant was issued. They kicked in his door and arrested him-that was his first law infraction in his life. Now they are pulling up old civil cases (from a now out of buisness company) to hold him w/o bail. Is this normal? Shouldnt they be going after rapist/murders/drug dealers...people that actually break the law?

No, that's it-we searched the records online. He had a civil case fron 1997 that they are holding him on but that company has now been sold. Is it normal for the police to go after people for driving infractions? I didnt pay a ticket once and I wasnt arrested. Plus it's 10 years later-he was pulled over in his car a few times in those 10 years-why didnt they do something about it then?

No, no tax evation. The case that they are holding him on back in 1997 was for FTA-but again..why wait 10 years to do something about it? And again, that company has closed and the claim was for less than $500-a civil case.

Actually, he DID break the law. I believe there is lots more to the story that you are not aware of. Most bench warrants are not actively searched for. They had another reason for going after him.

You can be arrested for not paying any ticket anywhere. Bail is set by a judge. Hopefully, he has obtained a good lawyer. Your friend did break the law. If he disagreed with the officer issuing the ticket he should have showed up in court plead not guiltily and it would go to trial and he could present his case.
There is more here than meets the eye. Officers don't bust down doors for failure to appear on a boating ticket. Either your friend is not telling you the truth or there is much more to this story.

If this is true, there is something more that he is not telling you. He could not be held for a civil case, that's why it is a civil case and not criminal. Also, no self respecting cop is going to kick down a door and arrest somebody for a 10 year old life jacket ticket. Come on, do you really think the cops have nothing better to do than bust people for that?

IT IS VERY STRANGE WHAT YOU QUOTE KICKED IN DOOR FOR A TRAFFIC (BOAT) VIOLATION.
WHAT PROBABLY HAPPENED WAS TRIGGERED BY THE WARRANT AN A LIST OF WARRANTS CAME UP TO JUSTIFY A FELONY CASE OF FTA.
THERE IS MORE TO THIS THEN YOU KNOW OR ARE BEING TOLD.
FEDERALS COULD BE INVOLVED FOR EVASION OF BACK TAXES???
WHAT EVER IS GOING ON SOMEONE WANTS HIM BAD, AND THEY ARE NOT LETTING GO?

He did break the law. More than likely it was a private sheriff or bounty hunter that got him, they get good money for doing this and don't want to risk going after serious criminals so they go after regular folks that break the law, its easier and the money is just as good.

get your F I L a good lawyer, he is going to need one.

I would send your girlfriend in to pay them as you may have some additional charges such as failure to pay or a failure to appear. So to be on the safe side send her in to pay them. Additional information: As laws are different for different parts of the country this depends on where you are from. In the Rocky mountain region your license isn't suspended they issue a warrant and also give you a failure to pay if after 3 months the fines still aren't paid then they will suspend your license
