They are similar.
They like to diss and ridicule people who speak the truth, a truth contrary to their beliefs and a truth that can expose their man-made belief system for what it is.
So they use deception (of others and of themselves) to try to demean the Church and people in it, to avoid having to do the hard, introspective work of finding out what God really wants for them.
They try to tout themselves as the only ones who have access to the ear of God and that everybody who disagrees with them must by definition be evil. This is nothing short of hatred in Jesus's name, the ultimate perversion of the gospel.

I must disagree with "kl", above, in one respect: Memorizing is not the ONLY way to hide the Word of God in our hearts, and therefore live it. It is ONE way. I'm sorry, but even if I engage in a session of dueling verses with someone and I run out of memorized verses before they do, what does that prove? Not a bloomin' thing, except that in their faith tradition Scripture memorization is taught and encouraged from a young age.
God's Word lives in my heart because I hear it (at Mass), read it (during personal and group Bible study), and meditate upon it in prayer. If I cannot always quote chapter and verse, you'd better believe I know where to find it and in what context.
Edited to add: Two billion??? O. Flower, are you Catholic?

indeed, the ancestors of the Fundamentalists are mentioned in Scripture: In John 6, they were the ones who abandoned Jesus when He said that they must eat His flesh, and drink His blood, else they would not have life within them;
They were the ones who did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, stating that they knew His brothers and sisters. (Matthew 13, Mark 6).

Both. The Pharisees were doing their best to honor GOD. The problem is that GOD's word is for us to use in our own walk with him and to help others when they need it. It is easy to fall into the trap of using the Bible like a baseball bat and beating people with it.

You're on a board that is designed to discuss religion, sweet girl. Why get your panties in a bunch when someone quotes God's Word?
That just doesn't make sense.
And, FYI, "Fundamentalists" are those of us who believe that the Bible (God's Word) is exactly that, God's Word. We aren't a small, nit-picky group, we are a body of believers that number over 2 billion.
accept it, dear one and God bless!

Seriously? Both. Memorizing is what enables you to LIVE it. Read Psalm 119.
Look at how Jesus responded to the temptation. He quoted scripture to the devil! Shouldn't that be our example!?!

Ironic isn't it, our priests and ministers have now actually become just like the pharisees, fat, drinking, eating gluttonous, twisting the holy book to support their own greed and ego while 80% of the earth still starves...nothing changes.
