We are thinking about getting a kitten, for us and our 1 yr old son. We are getting one from a shelter, and you pay a fee and they are supposedly i believe alreay spayed or nuetured. My question is what do i need to have done after that? I assume a vet check up? How often do the yneed shots or deworming? We are new to having kittens so any help please would be great. Just want to know what im looking to spend right away!

I would call the humane society and ask them. They have lower rates since they want to encourage adoption. I think after the 1st year (which is typically when you have vaccinations done) they are not that costly. A dog would cost you a lot more. Make sure you keep the kitten inside and you'd be perfectly fine with once a year check ups. Good luck and I'm happy for you and your family, kittens are a lot of fun :-)

Oh, and kittens don't need a whole lot of toys, they are VERY creative and play with anything.... THEY ARE SO LOVABLE!

well.. thet place you are adopting it from will have to tell you what they've allready done. Most places only adopt out speyed or neutered animals, or if the animal is very young, they may make you pay the price for a neutered animal, but give you a cirtificate to take when you get the animal neutered later.

Most likely it will be up-to-date on shots for it's age. Keep in mind that kittens (i belive) recieve different shots at 6 weeks, then again at 9 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks. After that, it's only once a year, and much cheaper.. So.. depending on it's age.. it may still have a couple shots to get.. Again.. the shelter will have to confirm

REGARDLESS, you WILL want to take it to YOUR vet for a check-up after you get it. MAYBE 2 check-ups...then you should be done for a year.

It will need deworming initially, but, if kept indoor, once it's worm-free, it should stay that way. My two indoor cats never have worms..

Keep in mind that the same goes for fleas. If you can get rid of them once, and keep the cat inside... then it should stay flea-free without any special treatment.

If it gets/has fleas, though.. keep in mind that fleas=worms. If it has one, it wilil have both. They get worms FROM fleas.

The kitten must be dewormed every month for the first 3-4 months. Also he will need a couple of shots, if he hasn't had it already. After that, they need a shot every year and deworming evey 6 months. However, what you need to consider is how a 1year old baby can coexist with a dirty litterbox in the house and a cat who may like to bite and scratch as a play. I am not saying all of them do, and I have a cat whom I'd trust around any baby, but I also have one whom I wouldn't trust. Saying this, if I had a baby I would definitely NOT get rid of any of my cats, but i'd be very careful.

Depending on the shelter, they come spayed/neutered, should be up to date on their shots and dewormed. They should also tell you if they need anymore shots or deworming. CONGRATULATIONS on the kitten!

An initial vet check up would be good, and that would be about $20. Be prepared for yearly vaccines and such. You are going to need a load of food, toys, and litter. If this is your first time with a kitty, I would suggest getting an older cat that is already housebroken. Good Luck!

P.S. If you want to, you can just find your perfect kitty ahead of time.

Your vet will tell you when you need to bring them in for shots etc.. just follow there instructions. The shelter should give you all the info you need
