I think this personality trait is endemic to religion for two reasons--First, it's the obedience factor. Do you know the 'preacher's daughter' type? The girl who acts all nicey-nice when people are looking and tortures small animals in her free time? She has a set of rules she's supposed to follow and when she breaks the rules it's a sin, regardless of which rule was broken. Therefore, she has no need to determine on her own which are harmless sins (masturbation) and which are not (sadism).
Secondly, I chalk the hypocracy up to the artificial forgiveness doled out by god. Once a sin is committed, all that is necessary to wash away the guilt is apologizing to god. No restitution, no change in attitude, no moral development is necessary. An all-loving god forgives a religious person automatically, so the religious person can go out and do the same thing again tomorrow. I'm speaking mostly about the judeo-christian-moslem branch of religion here, BTW. Other religions work differently, but...
Well, there is a personality trait of the religious that crosses all cultures. Look, I know the religious people are gonna jump down my throat over this, but all religions are wrong. There are no ghosts, there are no leprechauns, and there ain't no frigging god. Any child old enough to know that santa claus isn't real can figure out there is no god. But having that god to forgive them and love them no matter what depravities they commit is what keeps them from (rightfully) hating themselves, so they spend a lifetime teaching themselves to believe something their rational mind knows isn't true. This takes a person's natural tendency to redefine their world through their own perceptions and changes it from a character flaw to a positive trait. "I believe anything I want to believe regardless of evidence" applies to their own self-perception, and they can believe they are decent, ethical people while violating their own ethics daily. I think the last sentence serves just fine as a definition of hypocracy.

Religion teaches tradition, so these people learn that tradition tells them if they do something that would be wrong in God's sight, then they must do A or B in order to be forgiven. Instead of learning to live your life right no matter which or if any God you serve.
A person that isn't a hypocrite knows they aren't perfect and therefore do not use their life as a model for human reform, but treat everyone the same and not judge anyone else.

Unfortunately it's human nature to do one thing and say another. Just because you see a religious person doing something they say not to, doesn't mean that they aren't trying to be as Godlike as possible. As a young christian myself I know how hard it is, so people shouting us down all the time for one thing we did wrong and not picking up on the good we do doesn't help.
Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults— unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbor's face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. Do you have the nerve to say, 'Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt? It's this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor." Matthew 7:1-5

That's people in general just speaks something nd do the opposite. If you're human, you'll lie, you won't be perfect. It's just that people who aren't religions just keeps critizing believers when they fail, but the critics always forget that everyone is human, everyone will make mistakes. They consider it big news when a person, especially someone religious, messes up. That should stop, don't they have anything better to do than just watch people waitiing for them to fall. You know... that's why alot of people wont turn religions because critics are always watching them. that should stop

First off, what is your definition of "religious people?" People who are devoted to a certain religion or those who simply have one?
Anyway, "religious people" are sometimes hypocritical because they are human. Simple as that. They make mistakes just like everyone else.

You got it right RELIGIOUS people, those who
don't understand the gospel and that preach only the wrath of God and Thou Shalt Nots and do not employ the Grace and Mercy that is Jesus Christ are just that.
Unfortunately our sinful nature makes us lean in that direction and it is a constant fight against such behavior. "all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory"
God came to earth as a man to save all men by showing his example. But we as humans cannot reach that glorious standard. So he took the punishment, and now we have the chance to recieve eternal life by grace in faith.
Do you want to accept Him as your Saviour and forget about what people say and do?

Probably because some Christians are not delivering the right message.
The message is, all are sinners, Christ died for us. And anyone who wants to believe in Jesus Christ may be saved. God offered His grace through Jesus Christ, and we all may be saved through him.
If the message has anything to do with 'living pure' or living by the Ten Commandments, it is not the right message. Since the Bible shows that none can live by the law and please God. If we teach that we must, we set ourselves up to appear hypocritical because we are not teaching the right message.
As far as other religions go - they get what they get. It's not my concern that they are so persuaded unless they ask me.

I think on some level all of us are hypocrites whether we embrace religion or not.
But religious people are special because they claim a level of supernatural power that the rest of us don't have access too.
The reason they tend to claim one thing and do another has to do with the source of the power they rely on to perform the impossible for them.
It doesn't exist, so therefor we should expect them to fall short of the perfection some of them aspire too.
If someone claims they can pray to a God and regenerate a limb, I don't expect it to happen, the same applies to the same person who says they don't lie, cheat, lust or steal because the same God gives them strength. They are trying to fight against nature and fail because they are relying on a myth to support them.

Because what they preach is often ridiculous and anti-human. Example: the Catholic Church condemns sexuality in general, and homosexuality in particular; result: it becomes a front organization for serial pedophile priests.
We see it all the time, and the hypocrisy really is most evident in the standard Christian view of sexuality. The Very Reverend Ted Haggard, outspoken opponent of the "gay agenda," gets busted snorting meth off the butts of gay hookers. It's because these people can't just admit that humans are sexual animals. They can't just have sex and get on with their lives, so it becomes this morbid obsession; and of course it drives them absolutely insane to know that there are people in the world who aren't as abject as they are. So they attack the people who do openly what they do secretly and in shame.
