I'm getting married on November 10th and am curious as to when I'm supposed to start/finish all the legal paperwork for becoming an offical married couple.

Of course I will get the marriage license done this week but I'm speaking about the name change, joing bank accounts, insurance policies, etc. Can I jsut wait and take care of all of that when I return from my honeymoon?

Also, does anyone know what all I have to do in order to change my name in the State of Florida? Just go to the DMV? What else do I need to remember to change? Car title, etc?

Thanks!

Most banks and some companies will request a copy of your marriage license before they'll change your name. We had one of our parents mail the paperwork while we were on our honeymoon and I started making calls when we got back.

As far as setting up a joint checking account, we did ours before hand (we just added him to mine and closed his). Then after the we got all the paperwork back, we had my last name changed.

Congrats on the upcoming wedding! Best of luck to you both!

I got married in July and am still changing my name. I could not do anything until I recieved certified copies of my marriage license (about two week after the wedding). Work, the bank, DMV, social security all wanted to see the certified copy of the license before they would do anything. When I remember something or get something in the mail that has not been changed, I just change it at that time. The car title I did not have to change - it would've cost $55 and the DMV told me that when I sold it I could just sign my old name. I'm in Oregon, so Florida laws could be different when it comes to name changes.

You change your name with the Social Security office. You request a new card with your new name, and they ask for proof (marriage certificate). Yes, you can wait until after your honeymoon to do it all. In fact, you don't even have to change your last name if you don't want to...you're still legally married. License and car title will happen at the DMV (in most states).

I'm getting married the same day! Yay! Anyhow, Yes, you have plenty of time to do that after your honeymoon. There is no time limit regarding name changing and bank accounts. You can keep your own last name for years and then change it to his if you want! All you do is take the marriage certificate to the DMV, Social security office....also, you just make a photocopy of the marriage cert. and your new driver's license and send those into your credit card company.
Also- most people don't know this, but you can legally change your other names if you want to when you get married (just put the new name on the marriage certificate) For example, I hate my middle name, and love my last name, so I'm changing my middle name to my maiden name....I'll be First name, maiden name, new hubby's last name, instead of First name, middle name, new hubby's last name. Cool, eh?
Anyhow, good luck!

Most of that stuff you cannot do until you are married and the certificate is signed.

You'll go to the Social Security Office first, then to the DMV. Then banks, accounts, insurance policies, etc.

Make sure the expiration date for the marriage license is after your Nov 10th wedding date.

Everything can be taken care of after the honeymoon. I have been married for three weeks and am still working on changing everything to my new name. I went online to my state DMV and they had all the info that I needed for my license. Good luck with your wedding, I hope it is a wonderful day for you!

You cant do anything until you get your marriage license back, which takes about 1-2 weeks after its filed. So you have plenty of time to enjoy your honeymoon without worrying about the name changing tasks.
