It depends on the weather. In normal, or warmer weather for the season, deer will favor sweet foods (apples, perssimmons, and other things they would find in the woods). When the temperature drops quickly or stays unusually cold for some time, they prefer foods like corn, acorns, and other masts (these help to raise and maintain their body temperatures).

I find salt licks work best when they are put out in the spring after the snow is gone. Deer, especially bucks, need the salt all year long and will get in the habit of visiting the lick over several months. This habit will continue into the fall and give the hunter a lot more chances to see and harvest deer. It also brings a lot more deer into the area than might otherwise be there.

I can say that this sounds like a totally believable scenario, given the zealous nature of LEO's. The best answers so far have been provided by Jeff and dumdum (odd name....) Having had to deal with more than my share of legal entanglements, I can say that there is really no guarantee in hiring a lawyer. You can certainly end up waisting a lot more time and money with a lawyer. The simple fact is that many of them really don't care whether they win the case, just that they collect some fees. I think you will have a hell of a time finding any kind of atty who has ever seen a hunting reg. case. So they will be reluctant to pick up the case from the start. Do your math. Get a firm contract with the atty of what you can expect to pay for every and all expenses. The key is the "some guys that put bait out in the previous weeks." Any firm evidence of that? If you're willing to waist the money, do it. Unfortunately LEO's need as much resistance and containment in the courts as the public can afford. Its a crap-shoot. I've gotten out of tickets by showing up in court and the officer didn't, so the case was dismissed. The problem is worse than I can spell out here. In fact there is no feasible way to contain LEO's who even knowingly act inappropriately. They have degrees of immunity for poor actions. Sad...

My husband and I have used salt blocks, c'mere deer, doe estrust, corn, sweet potatoes, peanuts, etc....
The thing is, 1- is it legal in your area, and 2- what is local to your area. Around here there are a LOT of peanut fields, and deer love them, corn too, but apples aren't grown around here much and our deer don't seem to go after them. Now, that being said, sweet potatoes ARE grown around here a lot and deer haven't gone for those much either. I know it's hard to take the time to do this, but if it's legal in your area, then you just need to experiment a little. If you own your land or you are in a club every year, then invest a little money in a trail cam. Put the trail cam up on a somewhat decent trail and one at a time, try different things. Check you cam to see what's coming in to get what kind of bait.
Best of luck!

Rice Bran , and sweet potatoes, no matter what anyone else here says you put rice bran on the ground and it will be gone almost immediately , they love the stuff, I have piles of it next to my corn feeder and the eat twice as much rice bran as corn, in fact they dont touch the corn til the rice bran is gone, i have all this on video camera as proof enough for me, they also find it a lot sooner as it has a real agriculture smell to it, try it and you'll owe me a thank you ,, guranteed,,, P.S. you can get it at feed mills that sell cattle and horse feed.

You can get female Deer piss at your sporting goods store. Rub that on some old cloth and attach to the trees nearby where you hunt. It will draw the Bucks to your area.

Try to find an old apple orchard and collect as many apples as you can, 5 to 10 gallons at a time. Place them near your treestand or a place you can approach down wind. Rebait as needed and in time I know this will work, good luck.
