A UPS driver recently cut open the envelope that he left on our steps and stole cash. We know he did it, because it was cut open along the bottom corner, and left at our door. Without a signature, a driver MAY leave package at HIS/HER discretion. This would be foolish, since the envelope was clearly empty, and clearly had been tampered with. Any theif who would be lucky enough to happen along in the 45 minutes that the package was on our steps, would have taken the envelope, not cut it open. The driver COULDNToverlook this damage and lack of weight, if it had happened prior to their carrying it to my door by hand.
I called the police, and UPS. Reports are filed, but, no one will tell me the name of the driver. I'd luv to have a word with him/her.
If your just going to say not to send cash by UPS, then why bother responding?? Obviously, that's a given.
But if you have any thoughts on how to follow through further. I'd love to make sure this theif doesnt slip thru the cracks!

Hah (name of a responder), replied by saying they cannot leave the envelope without a signature, unless we had approved it. Thats how it USED to be, but, they changed that policy. NOW drivers MAY leave it anyway, but, at their own risk.
And, YES of course your average driver, with a career and a reputation wouldnt be likely to take the chance, BUT, I'm trying to find out if driver is...new....under other suspicion...substituting for the other driver, etc. Even if it IS the regular guy... he leaves that package "UN-signed", at his discretion. The package was CLEARLY tampered with. OR, a neighbor, who paid 600K for their house, decided to get into Federal mail theft??? Not likelly. Additionaly... I DO have a very visible security camera, 5 feet from the door!!! No one except the UPS guy, would be on that porch touching that package, except him. The camera is obvious, especialy if u were up to no good Unfortunately, the camera wasnt recording.

first of all, and you can hate me for this, NEVER send cash.....
there are so many options, Western Union and other cash transfer companies, money orders, checks.
Without proof of what was in the envelope, and without a witness to further provide proof of theft, and I'm sure that no one bothered to actually write down the numbers and denominations of the specific bills sent(something that the U.S. Military teaches), so without any of this to back your claim, I see no other way in which to proceed with any action.
Sorry....If in the future, you or whomever you correspond with in these ventures, wish to send cash, please take the time to write down the serial numbers and denominations of the bills, video tape the insertion of the bills into, and the sealing of the envelopes, and why not place a hidden video cam situated to be able to view any activity near the entrance of your home. That way, if something like this were to ever happen again, you would have positive proof, and therefore be able to prosecute the offending party

honestly it does NOT sound like you "know"... you suspect....BIG difference. I ask you this- unless it was an extremely large sum of money- why would a UPS worker risk his/her job over what "might" be in an envelope....having it left without signature (which actually cannot be done unless you authorize it) leaves you unable to prove it was the worker (unless you can produce an eyewitness, kiss that money good bye)
As for the driver- you can be assured that driver has a reassigned route....no need to take it out on the new one.

Trying sending another envelope to your own address. I don't know for sure, but chances are, the driver is assigned to your area or to that route and drives it often. (Are there any UPS workers out there who can confirm this theory?)
You may also want to check with the original sender to see if the envelope was insured. If so, you might be able to recoup some of the loss.
Good luck...

You pretty much don't have any recourse unless the driver turns himself in. Once you filed a report the driver was told about the report and I am sure he won't do the same because he knows he is being watched. The only hope is he has been reprted before and has a history of this and they may take action.

I am not trying to be an idiot here, but I don't think your theory is correct, the driver would have to be an idiot to threaten his job over an unknown amount of cash, I would put my money, no pun intended, on some neighbor, they would not have stolen the envelope if they had half a brain, cause then you would suspect a neighbor, this way, you suspect the driver just as they wanted you to........

usually UPS drivres have particulary routes they are assigned to. you could set him up by having another package sent with money or something else valuable and wait for it to be delivered. you could set up a remote monitoring area where you can watch the driver and see if they tamper with packaging again. you could also try setting up a discreet video monitoring system and catch him in the act. or find out who he is, find out where he lives, and steal seomthing that belongs to him.
