I retired from the AF and was an AF recruiter for about 10 years.
One of the reasons I use to tell the kids for joining was that it allowed them to get out from under their parents apron and on their own. Afterall, in the service, you have all the backing of health benefits, a guaranteed paycheck, a place to live, etc. So it is a good option.
I don't think I had anyone with the extreme reason as what you are talking about but it's def a good one, and for your friend, a smart choice.

I'm in the military and have heard of people that just wanted to escape the normal lives. I personally haven't met anyone that specifically enlisted to get away from their parents, but I'm certain that there are people that enlist for that exact reason.

I joined around the holidays way back when, so a lot of the recruits at the MEPPS Station simply wanted to get away from home.

Sometimes it is an escape from abusive situations. Your friend will need to get help so he does not follow the same pattern as his abusive father.

Me. My parents weren't "abusive," but I definitely wanted out of my house. I don't regret it, at all. It afforded me a bunch of options and experience that I couldn't have gotten had I just tried to move out on my own at 17.

Yes, he wanted to get away from all his parents rules and joined the Army. Boy, was he surprised when he discovered his parents where really lenient when compared to a Drill Sergeant.

In the military you will find people who have joined for every reason imagineable. You would be kidding yourself if you thought otherwise.
