22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Gospel of Matthew, chapter 6, New King James Version from biblegateway.com)

A lamp lights your path. Where your eyes go, your body will follow. Consider driving a car - if you look steadily to your left, the car will begin to swerve in that direction. Likewise, whatever you choose to focus on in life is where you will ultimately end up.

Behold only that which is good,
which you KNOW to be good,
and leaving evil things behind.

The Amplified Bible:
22. "The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light.
23. "But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you (your conscience) is darkened, how dense is that darkness!"

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE verse 26!
26. "Look at the birds of the air; they neither reap nor do they gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?"
27. Why worry and be anxious,...
28. Why be anxious about clothes,......
30. If God clothes the grass of the field, will He not much more surely clothe you?
31. Do not worry or be anxious,...for what to drink, or eat, or wear,......
32. Our Father knows we need them all.
33. But seek His kingdom and His righteousness first of all,..
and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

GOD is a AWESOME God!!!!!

,...I had to lift God up a little more-----

Much of what we see is not seen with our eye, but with our mind. Like the old question - is the glass half full or half empty. Both people "see" the same thing with their eyes, but they "see" it differently in their mind.

Jesus is saying that what your eye sees is "lit" (or we today would probably say "colored") by what you believe. If you believe that someone hates you, you will find a way to see every action that person does as somehow being evil. If you believe that someone loves you, you will find a way to see every action that person does as an act of love - which is why people stay in abusive realtionships for example.

What "lits" your body is how you see things. If you see it through faith, love, and devotion, then your body will be filled with "light" - good things.

But if you see it through doubt, hate, and destruction, then your body will be filled with darkness.

You can not do much about what you "see". The circumstances are usually beyond your control. But you can do something about how you "see" the situation. You can turn on (or off) the light within you.

The lamp and the eye stand for our intentions and choices.
The person with a good eye focuses on God alone and is totally loyal to His Kingdom. His life is full of God's light. The person with a bad eye makes other things the goal of his life. Because he has purposefully turned from God, his darkness is great.

What are you looking at? The Good or the Bad? Are you looking toward God?

Indeed if you are looking toward God, you are going to be full of his light.

If you are looking at the bad things in your life, "The things you don't have", "the things you need", and "the problems" you have, what is the light in you? It is darkness and gloomy, nothing to look forward to, nothing to carry you.

But if that light is God, you are walking in the Spirit right?

Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

Jesus said these verses as to remind us to focus on Godly things ... before these verses, He talked about treasures in heaven and where is our heart ... In another word, if we choose to focus on God's will for us, then our relationship with God will grow closer and intimate and real. However, if we choose to ignore God's will for us, then we are spiritually separated from God ... thus the darkness in us ... A post above mention about looking at pornography and being influence by it ... that is only the small tip of the iceberg ... when we put our self above God, then it shall be darkness in our life, although we might not realize it !!!! How do we know God's will for us ? By accepting the fact that we can do nothing to save ourselves except by believing Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for everybody sins and having a close relationship with God ... How to have a relationship with God ? Just like having a relationship with another human, we pray to God, read the Bible, discover His Presence in nature, having fellowship with other Christians etc ... God bless you

The KJV (not a corrupt text) says

22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

your eye is dangerous. You see before you sin.

Eve saw the fruit and desired it.

David saw Bathsheba and sinned

Lot saw Sodom and went that way.

You see with evil intent you will sin.

God saw his creation and it was good.

See with a righteous eye you will not sin.

I interpret it to mean that if you focus on good things, your mind and heart will be full of righteousness. But, if you focus on bad things, you will be filling yourself with unrighteousness. Like, for example when you read the Word, you are filled with the Word. And if you are watching porn, you are filled with immorality.

Spiritual vision is our capacity to see clearly what God wants us to do and to see the world from his point of view. But this spiritual insight can be easily clouded. Self serving desires, interests, and goals block that vision. Serving God is the best way to restore it. A "pure" eye is one that is fixed on God.
