Does anyone know of any good sites for those who know little or nothing of the science behind GW. I have been duped by a sceptic wanting just such information, I answered with the basics, as did others, only to get laughed at. I have found from a question of my own that there is a need, or at least a percieved need, for such a basic website.

Democratise GW knowledge, or suffer the consequences of the next 'dark age'.

http://www.realclimate.org is a blog run by climate scientists. Go to the 'Start here' link and err... start there.

My favourite is this, although it's long and goes somewhere beyond basic. But it's clearly not political:

http://profend.com/global-warming/

This is great for someone who's already gotten a bunch of "skeptical" arguments:

http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/dn11462

These are very good, but may be considered too "liberal" by some:

http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/basicinfo.html
http://www.worldwildlife.org/climate/basic.cfm
http://www.nrdc.org/globalWarming/f101.asp
http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science/
http://www.net.org/warming/science.vtml

Ron Cs idea of mainstream sites (a long and complicated history that doesn't really explain and is only of interest to someone who's already knowledgeable; and a political blog) is one of his more devious moves, not really worthy of him. I only comment because it's the second time he's done something like this. He knows perfectly well that there are many more distinguished mainstream sites, and lists bad ones for your question.

Ron C - I like AIP's site very much. But to recommend it as an answer to this question is disingenuous. It's not a place for the unknowledgeable to learn the basics. Nor is realclimate, in my opinion. It's not an organized logical progression, to put it mildly.

Keith P - gristmill is decent, but I somewhat prefer newscientist's version. That may be a matter of taste.

Yahoo!'s directory for global warming is the best source for all the best links to both sides of the debate. Here's the link:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Environment_and_Nature/Global_Change/Climate_Change/Global_Warming/

On this page, there is a list of links to some of the really good global warming related websites and, you can also click on Global Change, near the top of the page and find out more about other relevant subjects like deforestation, desertification and climate change in general.

People need to read sites written by Pro-AGW (Warmers) and Anti-AGW (Skeptics).

Warmers
For a good history of global warming called "The discovery of global warming" by Spencer Weart
http://www.aip.org/history/climate/

For a blog by the most respected climate sensitivity expert the warmers have (he's wrong of course because he is based off of the global temperature record which we now know to be all fouled up)
http://julesandjames.blogspot.com/

Skeptics
For a blog by the most respected and prolific climate scientist on the planet
http://climatesci.colorado.edu

For the website surveying and photographing all weather stations to determine their quality ranking so the global temperature record can be adjusted
http://surfacestations.org

For a blog by the man who broke the Hockey Stick and found the NASA GISTEMP error
http://climateaudit.org

-----
Note to Bob- I'm surprised you don't like Spencer Weart's discussion of the "Discovery of Global Warming." Most warmers consider this to be very well written and I have seen it endorsed on RealClimate and by other warmers. Do you dislike James Annan as well?
