There is no best dog, it is all depending of what type of dog is right for you, since you will pick a companion for at least 10 to 15 years! Do you want a big or small dog? Easy to groom or not? Outdoor type or indoor type? Kids or no kids? I think to make the wise choice, you should consider making this test:

"Best dog of company?" I don't understand what you are asking. Is it best dog for having company over? Best companion dog for you? best dog for a companion for another dog?
In any case, research different breeds, talk to breeders and owners of the breeds you are considering. Sit down and be honest with yourself about how much work you are willing to do; grooming? difficult to potty train? need long walks daily? After you know what you can reasonably care for, you will be better able to select from the breeds you have researched.

They all want to be near you, and a smaller one is easier to cuddle!
A tip for getting one from the shelter: get a dog at least 6 months old so you'll have an idea how big it's going to be. Puppies are darling and the shelter people don't know their breeding - so they're just guessing when they tell you it won't get too big.

FOR company.... nearly any. All dogs are pack animals and want to be part of the pack. i.e. the family they live with is their pack.
I personally prefer smaller dogs... Schnauzers are great, as are Yorkies, Poodles, Shitzus and Chihuahuas.

Pugs are great. I always thought they were funny looking until I got one and now I love them. They're always happy and love to be near people.
