I live in a duplex in the bay area. My next door neighbor has now tapes my wind chimes twice. Last night I posted a note at my door please do not tape my wind chimes. The last two renters never said anything about my wind chimes. I have been here 3 years now with no problems until now. I never complainted about the loud parties, all people coming and going all night.

I read your question and had me a good chuckle. I know its a serious matter having your wind chimes duct taped but I just would really have loved to see the events leading up to this predicament.

Probably the chimes were driving him bonkers or something. He takes it and takes it until he couldn't take it no more. Grabbing a hold of his duct tape he bounds for your house and lays his hands on the confounding chimes.. taping them up and silencing their tinkling noise.

I wonder if i can duct tape my neighbour's dog's mouth or the cat who keeps pooing in my back yard.

Girlie.. I'd just really go across and ask the neighbour to stop coming on my property and interferring with my things. I'd also leave some Vitamin B complex tablets to strenghten their nerveous system. Some people are just nerveous that way eh....

I personally love the chimes but to some its like tying up someone under a leaking fosset and letting the water drip drop by drop on their foreheads.. eventually it'll drive them nuts.
I'm sure that you both can work out a happy compromise. But i do thank you for posting this serious yet funny Q.

All the best to ya hun...

It is spelled Duct tape.

And yeah wind chimes drive people nuts. I personally cant stand hearing the clock in our bathroom when i'm trying to sleep. Yet the sound of the e-way puts me to sleep. go figure. So maybe it's an issue with that. They might be trying to sleep and the chimes are keeping them awake. You're lucky they didnt disappear and were only taped. Which might have been a signal that they were annoying.

If you really want to keep them out, then you might want to move them to the other side of the house or porch and see if that helps things any. Just move them to a place that is farther from that neighbor, or around a corner so they wont hear it.

I hate to tell you this, but some people find wind chimes annoying. However, I don't agree with what your neighbor did. He/she should have never taken it upon himself/herself to duct tape your wind chimes. They should have simply left you a note or knocked on your door to inform you that they are a problem. I have a neighbor 4 houses down that has wind chimes. I can hear them when I'm out, especially in the spring when its very windy and they tend to get annoying at times, but I have never been bothered enough to want to tape them! lol! That seems a little extreme.

Sheesh, your neighbor COULD have just left a polite note on your door, but noooo.....I would be tempted to get about 50 more wind chimes, but in the end, I think I would just decide to be nice and take them down :)

It sounds like you are the better neighbor anyway, putting up with the noise from the neighbor's place.

Are you absolutely sure who is doing this? If so, knock on their door. With a smile, ask if they are being funny or truly bothered by the chimes. If they are annoyed by them, tell them all they had to do was say so. With a bigger smile, just say "next time lets all act like adults". Take them down and decorate with something silent. You be the good neighbor. They will be embarrassed for quite awhile. Who knows, maybe you will all end up being good friends and neighbors.

first i would have to ask what makes you so sure it is the neighbor? have you ACTUALLY talked to him/her? if not, lets not jump to conclusions, but if it is, try talking to them calmly. ask them why it is bothering them. it may really be a problem for them. wind chimes are beautiful AND annoying. some wind chimes are designed to make the prettiest sounds when blown and then some are just big wastes of time, and sound sooo loud. like glass breaking, or garbage cans clanging together. i hope you don't have one of those?!?!? ask yourself why do you HAVE to have the wind chime? is it really beautiful to hear, or are you now just keeping it to get on your neighbor's nerves. what about the wind chime makes your life better, improves your existence? if your life doesn't depend on it, than it wouldn't hurt to part from it. apologize to your neighbor for the aggravation, PLUS (the real benefit) now he feels obligated to you to return a favor. great time to tell him about the loud parties at night!!! see it's a win-win!!!

Although your neighbor was wrong in taping the chimes instead of doing the mature thing and simply coming to you about them, wind chimes can be extremely annoying. Especially if you live somewhere that gets a lot of wind. Think about it, who wants to be waken up in the middle of a windy night because of wind chimes? I think you should approach your neighbor and ask if your wind chimes bother him/her. If they do, be considerate and mature and take them down. I'm sure you love the sound of your wind chimes, but not every one wants to hear them.

Send your neighbor to my house. I have 6 wind chimes outside of my bedroom window. Windy nights with the window open is great.

Your neighbor should have asked you to move them and told you that they are driving him crazy. He had no right to vandalize your property.

I had a neighbor order my son not to listen to his music while in the yard during the afternoon. Not a wise thing to do. Whenever I saw him outside I immediately turned the radio on full blast with the most awful music I could find. Of course he didn't have the b#lls to say anything to me. No that's not the type of person I am. But he had no right to order my son to do anything.

Obviously the consant clanging irritates them. I totally understand. I think having wind chimes, unless you live on a large property is really inconsiderate. If you enjoy the sound, bring them inside and turn an electric fan on them, seriously. Not everyone likes the sound, myself included.

Your neighbor is expressing his feelings. It's up to you to put your wind chimes away and be a good neighbor. It would have been nicer if your neighbor had spoken with you, but the fact remains it's up to you to do the right thing.
