I took my year old black lab out this morning to play fetch. I threw his ball and it went into the bushes. Oz always goes full speed to retrieve and often "crashes" through brush and bushes. When he came back he dropped the ball and wouldn't pick it back up again, which is very ususual. I brought him inside and he was smacking his lips-like he would if I gave him a spoonful of peanut butter. I gave him his water and left him for about five minutes. When I came back he was drooling profusely and still smacking his mouth. I wiped his mouth off and looked inside his mouth, but I didn't see anything. Any ideas? The search I did sounded like he possibly could have gotten a splinter that I missed when I looked. I'm just concerned about choking and poisoning. The bushes are buckthorn and he often comes back with a mouthful of weeds or leaves when he grabs his ball. Could a leaf from buckthorn be poisonous enough to make him do this?
Thanks so much.

It about 50 degrees and we had only been out there about five minutes. It's also rainy outside and he had already had his breakfast about 30 min. earlier. I did not cook anything this a.m. My parents are going over to check on him in an hour, so hopefully he is fine. Any other ideas or things to look for when they go check on him would be appreciated.

Our dog drools a lot when he is in pain- it's the first sign he gives us that something is bothering him. If it continues, I would take him to the vet- he might have pulled a muscle or he might have a splinter in his paw.
Good luck!

It could be that your dog has nausea, it could be that he grabbed a cane toad in the bush and he has toxicity from that, it could be that he grabbed something else that is toxic. I would wash his gums with a cloth and water (don't hose out his mouth) and get him to a vet to have him checked out.
It is sometimes hard to figure out what it could be as 1. we can't see the dog and 2. we have no idea where in the world you are because different areas have different toxins to consider.
Good luck with it all

Did you smell the ball? seriously!! Perhaps a skunk had been back there and the smell got on the ball? Inspect the bushes and see if any liquids or foreign material is on the ground. Sounds like the ball might have gotten something on it and was bad tasting to your dog. I would throw it away and give him/her a new one.

This same thing would happen to my yellow lab. We never knew what caused it until one day, I could see that he was visibly chewing something. For some reason, he used to eat our cat's poop and this would happen. Maybe when you threw the ball, it rolled into the feces of another animal and he didn't realize it until he dropped the ball.

Drooling excessivley is a common symptom to many ailments, and only your vet will know for sure, but you are probably on the right track.

Some dog breeds drool excessively. If you were cooking breakfast that could make him drool more. They do that when they smell food.
