A system restore DOES NOT perform a file restore or a backup.

It only restores the system registry and critical OS files. Meaning: if you pick a 3 day old restore file. The system will start as it did 3 days ago. You won't lose any files you created since then because it doesn't analyze the HD for file changes.
BUT - because you are restoring the registry you will lose any programs you installed that require registry settings. The files for the program aren't actually deleted, just lost the connection to the OS. A simple re-install would fix this. (Just make sure you install in the same location) otherwise you will have two copies of identical files on the HD and one set is completely worthless.

You may want to turn off any firewall or Virus protection running too.

A system restore only stores a small amount of information about the registry and other important system files needed for Windows to run. Unless the file is a "system" file, doing a restore would not remove the file. As it does revert the registry, a program installed after the restore point was made may not work. But it is not because the files are gone, but because the registry information for the program is gone.

If you do a restore and something you needed does disappear, you can always undo the restore and get everything back.

A system restore does NOT back up your files. If you look at the systen restore calendar, you will probably find a couple dozen restore points. If it backed up all your files, it would mean that you would have a couple dozen copies of every file on your computer. That would run you out of hard drive space very very quickly.

The system restore only backs up a handful of critical system and registry files. You have to back up everything else yourself.

You will lose all programs installed after the restore point date.

You wll not lose files stored on your HDD.

When you do a restore it does not take any backups.
