The true meaning is a miraculous ability to speak in the native tongue of another person without having studied that tongue. One is Divinely "inspired" with the new language. That is the only proper Scriptural meaning.

The heretical, indeed, blasphemous meaning is to babble a bunch of nonsense that is then "translated" by the local clergy to have a meaning appropriate to the congregation.

Usually the present of tongues manifests itself as an distinct and even astounding capability to be taught a international language, particularly while the learner is meant to evangelise the gospel in that language. This is by and large given in areas just like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Missionary Training Center, in which 2 months of language guide, combined with doctrinal and educating guide, equips many younger guys and females to communicate with folks of different languages and cultures. In a few circumstances, the Lord bestows the present of interpretation of tongues so folks can fully grasp Latter-day Saint missionaries who've best 2 months of language guide. ;zero) He is aware of our person strengths and weaknesses. A much less common, although no much less priceless, expression of the present of tongues is while a minister of God have got to supply a message, lesson, or sermon and a able and sincere translator isn't to be had. On the day of Pentecost, folks from many places of Europe and Asia heard Peter and different church leaders pontificate, however all of them understood. (On moment idea, this instance is a higher example of the present of the translation of tongues, however you get the concept). The 3rd method this present is expressed is customarily normally counterfeit. Yes, to a few it's given to talk within the tongue of angels, however that relatively is not going to do some thing for any person except anybody with the present of decoding tongues is reward and beneficial to aid.

According to the scriptures, the "gift" of tongues meant that if you desired to witness, to spread the word of God, that you could go amongst people who do not speak your language, and the "holy spirit" would descend upon you, and then the people you were speaking to could understand you. They literally hear you speaking *in their own language*.
The incoherent babble that you hear people do nowadays has NOTHING to do with "speaking in tongues" as described in the scriptures. The real "gift" of tongues was meant to be a gift to the listeners as well as the speaker, so they could receive the "word of God".
For a person to roll around babbling incoherently to claim that they've received the "gift of tongues" from God, would actually be a slap in God's face. It was not intended to be a gift for one person's benefit only, for them to show off.

And those that claim that the babbling can be "translated" by someone else who "has the holy spirit"--if you took two people who claim they can "translate" into separate rooms, and ask them to translate what they just heard...guess what? They're NOT going to give the same, or even similar "translations". They're just making it up as they go along.

It means to speak in an unknown language.

It is the Spirit of God that gives a person the utterance, it is not learned by the person.

It may be a known language (some one who heard my fried speaking in tongues one time wanted to know where he learned to speak such fluent Latin, but he never has learned Latin), or it may be the tongues of angles (the Bible tells us that).

Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38: "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Jesus Christ told Nicodemus the following, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." As an example of this baptism Jesus used the illustration of the wind blowing, "The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." John 3:8 We can feel the wind blow, not know where it is coming from or where it is going, but we can HEAR it blow. We know when someone has received the baptism of the holy Spirit because we can hear them pray in tongues. The scripture in Acts 2:38 is the fulfillment of the prophecy given by the prophet Joel in Joel 2:28, "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions."

Furthermore it is commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ in Mark 16:16, 17: "16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues."

When someone has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit he/she has received from God a new heavenly prayer language. There are different types of tongues spoken of in the Word. Tongues used for prophecy (requires interpretation and is for the edification of the church" and again ones' personal heavenly prayer language which does not require any interpretation because it is only between God and the believer who is praying. The apostle Paul praised God that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else. God Bless!

All I know is that how can you understand a preacher speaking in jibbrish? What benefit does the congregation get out of it? nothing therefore smashing the idea that talking in tongues is allowed. God doesn't want preachers preaching in tongues. How will you be saved from that? Plus they are just making some stuff up, but maybe some can speak it. Those that are on Tv doing it though are just fake people trying to get some money. Sorry it just bothers me

It means that you have been baptised with the Holy Spirit and are speaking as the Holy Spirit gives you utterance:

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

When the holy spirit over comes you and you begin to speak in a different language not known to this world. It can be a form of worship, but not everyone can speak in tounges. It, by no means, makes that person a 'better Christian'.

Speaking in tongues is the gift of the Holy Ghost as described in Acts 2:38. It is absolutely necessary, and Paul says that those who speak in tongues speak not unto men but unto God. It is a naturally unaquired language, and you won't understand it. Your spirit is communing with God! Wonderful just to think about. Paul says to forbid not to speak in tongues. If you are speaking in tongues you need to be baptized in Jesus name, and welcome to the Faith! IM me if you need more information. I speak everyday in tongues, as it is my private prayer language.
