try getting a hostel room. Since there's at least 3 of you judging from the question, they'll probably find you a private room, which is about 15£pp a night last time I checked - for all of you together that would be cheaper than a stay in a hotel for one person. If there's enough of you, you may even get a dorm room, which turns out even cheaper.
As for why it's expensive to stay in a b&b/hotel: traveling is considered a luxury and thus they're free to charge whatever they want. Also they have to make their money for a year mostly during the summer months and outside of that, they still have to pay all their personnel (hotels especially) and make sure the accommodation stays in order (mattrasses do get worn out, beds may have to be replaced after a while,...)

its not expensive in premier inns. or travelodge. very good value for money. you have to remember that prices are all relevent. according to wages etc. so if you are from lithuania uk prices are expensive. if you are from sweden we are cheap. i think .you need to shop around but i would expect to pay £45-£60 per person per night. you could try campsites. they are cheaper at this time of year

It is assumed that hotel accommodation is for entertainment and 'pampering'. ......expensive because it is not 'subsistence' accommodation. There is no limit to the amount of money people will pay ...to enjoy themselves.
If you go to a hotel for accommodation, you must be Ms moneybags.

The cheapest option is a premier travel inn. Take a look at their website.

Find a Travelodge in the area....basic, but comfortable, and generally have lots of deals on offer.

Check out hostels. They can be absolutely wonderful clean places, that welcome families. Just be sure to do your research first. Two sites I like to use are hostelworld and tripadvisor for prices and peoples opinions who have actually stayed there.
