I see people posting questions on how to diagnose illness in an infant for example.I mean WTF?Why do people trust so much the advice of strangers over their own doctor? Then if you tell them they should seek advice from a medical professional, they give you a thumbs down!

Even if you don't have insurance, it doesn't cost anythng to call a Dr's office or hospital and ask a nurse or since you are already online , go to WebMD or something. I'm talking about serious things , or things concerning pregnancy or babies especially.

" can't afford "is another way of saying "choose to spend the money on something else" Money spent on a computer and internet acess can afford you some health insurance if you choose .That's just being irresponsible. Subjecting children to that stupidity ( no health insurance, no doctor) seems outrageous to me and a form of neglect . Also , asking others' opinion about something after you've seen a doctor is not the same as relying on the infromation posted by strangers to decide what to do in a potentially serious situation. A lot of times, people don't know what they are talking about and will post anything at all just to get their 2 points.

It disturbs me more that people give bad advice as if they are experts rather than saying, "Sounds pretty bad. See a doctor."
I just saw a mother asking for information on comforting her child until she could get to the doctor's appointment she'd already made, and someone said, "Just sounds like the cold coming out." WHAT does that even MEAN? I've been around children my whole life and never heard of a cold "coming out" in the urine! The mother knew enough to get the doctor's appointment. I just hope advice like that doesn't make her doubt that good decision.

I agree. I keep seeing these "teenage girls" on here asking if they are pregnant and giving their symptoms, my only answer you had sex, and didn't wear a condom your chances are very high but go see your doctor!
It is slightly disturbing that these people would rather trust the advice of a stranger than a licensed professional. I know when I think I am sick I haul my butt to the doctor and he tells me what is wrong with me because THAT'S HIS JOB! And on the thumbs down, I have noticed when I'm honest I get a thumbs down. So maybe I should start lying to these girls, "no honey you're not pregnant, it's okay to have sex at 13 and not wear a condom".

Not everyone can afford health insurance or a Doctor's visit so they try to get whatever help they can. I certainly wouldn't ask for medical advice from Answers but I can understand why some people would.

yes, very disturbing, I don't answer medical questions anymore - I used to tell people to go to a doctor - never got a thumbs down for that - just won't be answering medical advice questions anymore

it scares the daylights out of me that ppl look for serious medical advice here! when i was first diagnosed with diabetes, i searched for help and living advice from long term diabetics... certainly not a diagnosis!
also scares the daylights out of me that there are still questions about 'i had unprotected sex could i be pregnant'. seriously, sometimes i think ppl are posting these questions for a laugh... they can't be THAT silly!

I think it's because they don't trust doctors. I have no trust in them. It does bother me that young people would rather ask a question on here rather than talk to their parents.

I don't find it disturbing if the person cant afford to go to the doctor or they have already been to the doctor and they still feel sick.
