Allthough I prefer the KJV, this basically means that we will do greater works than Jesus did while He was here on earth. We can do that because Jesus will be finally glorified and interceding with the Spirit for us. We being now pure (after following the plan of salvation) can do greater things.

Some could make the argument that flying in a plane is a miracle that is "greater" than those Jesus performed. Think about it, you are in a hollow metal tube with wings on it - only by some skilled observation of wings and engineering by folks with God-given talent could ever make a hunk of metal and 200 people get off the ground and move at great speed.

that is one thing i do not understand
i m sure you can say i believe in god and in prophets and books but as you said it its not in talk it is in walk
do some thing
there was one question about the 10 comandments, the first 5 ones are talk the other 5 are talk
do not kill
you see all that killing in the world
in iraq 665 000 are killed
red indians are almost eradicated
palestinians are killed daily and so on
do not lay others wives or girls
what doi you see
rare to see a virgin and those who says they are certain percent doing that keeping herself for marriage but the rest were very shy saying it
other pple wives you know better than i how things are going
do not steal
all the iraqi pitrol as an example is stolen
see in life there are who work hard earning money ,but see others robbing and its not minority
so all are doing sins expecting just saying oh my lord we believe in you so all will be let in gods mercy
the deeds are so bad
the fact is do good things then expect the mercy

All of the ones above me seem to hit on it well, I guess an example might be handy. We know that Jesus preached to many, but look at Billy Grahmn, he has spoken live to over 100 million people, about the word of God. That I think is one of the things that was meant. Yes Our LORD did great things, but don't be intimidated by that, go and do what you can and God will work through you to accomplish his plans.

It can mean several things
1)Jesus lied
2)Jesus was misquoted
3)Jesus was wrong
or
4)there are no true Christians with true faith
That's the only choices you have. There it is,in context, clearly referring to miracles, clearly saying "anyone with faith"not just the disciples, right after he said "if you don't believe in me,believe in the miracles. It is an actual, verifiable scientific test, set u by god himself,to determine the validity of Christianity. In 2,000 years, not one has been able to show their faith. No "context" loopholes,no "metaphoric" loopholes. It is literal,in context, yet not one soul has done ANYTHING that proves their faith, according to Jesus himself.
The first 3 options pretty much destroy the whole "infallible word of god"part.
The last option tells us there are no true Christians.Warp it all you want kiddos,it's clear.NONE of you,not one, pass Jesus' very own scientific faith test.

The version I read is:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father."
This means that some Christians, who believe, will do all the things Christ Himself did while in His ministry here plus even greater things. He refers to Himself going to the Father because after He went the Holy Spirit came upon the Christians.
The Holy Spirit, who is God, indwells in Christians empowering them to do great works. Some of these works are even greater than Jesus did when He walked with us.
Yours in Christ Jesus

my bible reads
John 14-12-14
In solemn truth I tell you, anyone believing in me shall do the same miracles I have done, and even greater ones, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask him for anything, using my name, and I will do it for this will bring praise to the Father because of what I, the Son, will do for you.
"Yes, ask anything, using my name and I will do it!

Eh?
I really don't get your question, did you mean explain what the passage means in normal modern English (although it seems pretty straightforward to me anyway).
Jesus said he will do even greater things through us (humanity) than he did himself when he was on earth, because he is now up in heaven with his dad, God.

that means that if we allow Jesus Christ to use us as he wishes he is going to cause us to do greater things than he did the 33 years he was here himself is the flesh. that is saying a lot considering the miracles he did in that short time not to mention saving our souls
