My sister is afraid of dogs... but she's been bit by 3 dogs... 2 of which she was told 'are friendly and don't bite' She's also be chased by dogs as an adult... and we're not talking about little dogs. They've been like German shepherds, pitbuls, rottys, and doberman pinchers. My niece is also afraid of dogs.. but she was chased by one when she was about 4. They're just dog magnets. Lol. She's not afraid of my dog, and wasn't afraid of her husbands parents dog... however she refuses to believe that my dog is mixed with German Shepherd... though it's quite obvious. When my sis was little the dogs behind us were used as guard dogs... one was a German shepherd and the other was a doberman pincher... we didn't have a fence so when my sisters would be outside playing the dogs would come after them. At one point the dogs were loose and a cop, 3 teens, my sisters, and my parents were stuck inside my living room because the dogs were coming after them... eventually animal control took them away.

People are afraid of dog:
They have had a bad experience in the past with a dog, either the dog scared them, snarled at them, chased them, perhaps just came running and knocked them down. Whatever the situation, they lump all dogs together based on their one experience.
They have heard the stories about vicious dog attacks, and only see the bad news, they don't hear about the dogs that save lives, lead the blind, hear for the deaf, are a companion to their owners. Therefore, since their only experience is with the bad side, they don't feel anything good about them.
Or
They have never really been around dogs, so don't know anything about them. They are afraid of the unknown.

Have you ever ran into a growling dog, that's about to attack you? I have.
I have a dog of my own a Chow Chow, and I love her.
I have had at least four dogs in my lifetime, so I love dogs.
The thing is I have ran into some vicious ones too, that wanted to attack.
Onetime I went for a walk, me and my husband had a spat, and I had tears screaming down my face. As I was walking out of the blue, a dog came running down the hill out of someone's driveway, and was growling at me, and snapping at my heals. I remember that if a dog does that to stand still and do not move, which I didn't. The dog circled around me growling with drowl coming out of his mouth, I was terrified.
I didn't know what to do, and hoped someone would come and help me. As I looked up I saw that a older couple was coming in their yard to work in their yard. They told me not to move, which I didn't, and was calling the dog back. The dog still continued to growl until the man came, and got his dog by the collar, and I was able to walk away. As I was walking my heart was pounding and I was trembling all over, and my head hurted as though my blood pressure had went up.
I was in total fear for my life.

Because they can be very ferocious, especially when they are trying to protect something (or someone) and will bite anyone who they think is a threat.

I personally think they're better than cats. At least with dogs, you know if they're "in a bad mood", and gives you an idea not to mess around with them. Cats, on the other hand, may be purring one second and scratching your face the next.

Some religions/cultures i ve heard of (from classmates, friends, etc.) teach that animals are not meant to be companions, so some people just don t have experience with dogs as pets possibly.

For a LOT of reasons! This depends on what kind of dog it is and how it is behaving, for starters. I, for instance, wouldn't think of reaching my hand out to pet a snarling pit bull, for example. ALL dogs are not friendly.

I don't know...I've seen my neighbor freak out over a little chihuahua. I can understand if it's a big vicious pit bull or something, but a chihuahua or a terrier? Get a grip!
