Have you looked at your fire brigades website? I live in Cheshire and have just looked at there's and they have a lot of info about applying for them and on what jobs they have available and what they would be doing. Sounds like they take on a lot of people on a yearly basis:

Have a look at your county fire website.
Have you tried contacting your local brigade and asking them for advice on how to apply?
Hope that helps!

Depends where you are living. Here in London all you need do is go to their website : -
London Fire Brigade | Headquarters, map of Main Building (Contact us)
Here is a map to help you find your way to Main Building at 8 Albert Embankment, London SE1.
http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/contact_us/map_main_building.asp
If you go to the above site, you should be able to click around until you find something about recruitment.
I read a story in a paper some years back of one guy who joined his local fire brigade [forget where] - he came out of the fire brigade after 20 years service and told the local rag that he had not actually been called out in all those years to a local fire, but instead had gone to major fires far away by train - just to keep his hand in. Think he must have been stationed in a very small market town by the sound of it where the worst thing that can happen is a hay-stack fire.

Just pop into your local fire station and ask for advice . They may actually have an application form and even if they are not looking for new recruits just now at least you can register interest
The fire service , and the other emergency services are a fine bodies of men and women who do fantastic work for the rest of us
I hope you get your wish and are able to join them all .
Good Luck

Although I live in America, I'd suggest that you go to the local fire brigade headquarters and inquire. I became an auxiliary police officer, by doing this.

My brother in law is a fireman. He spent years as a part time fireman before he finally got a full time job.
So all I can suggest is have a crack at that but be prepared for the long haul. I think all fire services have long waiting lists.
But if its what you really want just don't give up. Good luck...
