it works like resistance in a circuit. The insulation adds Resistance to the movement of heat, slowing the rate of heat transfer.

All insulation is easy to undrestand if you know that the real insulation is the air without movement inside the material, this is the real insulator. the heat is transfer by conduction, convection or radiation. In a house the radiation is omly the light, the convection is stoped for the static air inside the insulation and the material of wich tha insulator is made of is a bad termal conductor.

Simple, heat in three forms will rise, and even a dead air space will slow the transfer, radiation form will penetrate and be absorbed by the material, and is reflecked by surface and angle texture. Up north we once thought 3-4 inches in walls, and 6 inches in ceiling was enough, but since then it has been doubled. You can stay warm by wearing a hat outside, and will not have to peel off clothing when it warms up.

It's supposed to...it's like asking why does my overcoat or sleeping bag keep me warm? The insulation is a barrier to heat transmission, either in or out.
