How about "pardon me."

All affected will know what he means.

Neither, in most circumstances.

Why would you need to say it at all? Either you've just done it and everyone knows anyway, so you say 'excuse me'.

If you're telling anyone later (perhaps as an embarrassing or humorous story), presumably it's a close friend or family member, so 'farted' is better, because why would you need to use a euphemism with close friends or family?

Anyway, 'passed gas' is one of those fake polite euphemisms that actually sound worse than the word or phrase they replace. In the UK and Ireland the polite euphemism is 'I broke wind' or 'I passed wind'.

There's nothing wrong with saying "fart" when you are among friends and family. In fact, it actually strengthens our family bond when we can all get together and have a good laugh at someone else's expense over an accidental fart. However,I teach my kids not to say it at strangers' houses , church, restaurants, or at dinner. Some of the people on here probably can't fart because they're so uptight. Lighten up!

Well I would rather have my kids say "excuse me". Its much nicer than saying.. "Oh! I farted!" or "haha I passed gas". It also doesnt use the word gas or fart and you get the idea.

But if I had to choose, Id say farted. When little tiny 3 year olds say that its funny, but eww at the same time.

Teach them to say "excuse me". People that find it amusing to teach their kids to say they farted and laugh about it just make me cringe (yes, some of my own family members are that way). They come off as vulgar and trashy. What you allow them to say at home is reflected in their behavior in public at the most inopportune times!

I farted. Who cares, it's your family so you're not going to be uptight and completely polite every second, or whatever is comfortable.

Farted is a crude word. Teach them the proper name for it, if you know it.

I've taught my daughter to say "excuse me" or "pardon me" in polite company. When she's with my brothers it's usually "that was a good one!". My brothers are really bad influences. lol

I would teach them to try really hard NOT to do it at all in public. It is disgusting.
Teach them it is something to be done in the bathroom.
