Irish has both Mac/Mc and O' meaning son, there is also Uí.

Generally you would have to know the history of the particular sept. There are some spelling differences like Gallagher(Irish) and Gallacher(Irish or Scottish), Doherty(Irish) and Docherty(Scottish).
