Time heals all wounds but when there's no wound to heal, it fixes what ain't broke and makes the love between two parties become lesser. The increasing unfamilarity, awkwardness, gowing distrust between the pair (usually by the person in prison towards the one outside),and suspicion as time wears on are all factors that could kill off love.

In very very FEW cases, do relationships and/or marriages survive when a spouse serves any given number of years prison time. The whole experience is akin to having a spouse virtually die, leaving the survivor to face overbearing hardships keeping a home and family.
That alone can kill a marriage---and more often than not, it does.
The seperation is prevalent--one that can't be eased by accepting collect calls from prison or soothed by the few hours of contact visits each month. And I pity the poor small children, who visit their prisoner parent--exposed to other inmates nearby (some of whom may be sexual child predators). The kids cry when they have to leave their incarcerated parent behind as they go on home; that's a life changing impact for them to bear.

most people experience bad things that they would rather not talk about. it causes a big void in the relationship because the other person has 3 years worth of things to talk about, the other one has nothing to contribute

yes it can. when you are away from someone for a long time and then they came back often there not the same person and you feel you dont know them as well and dont have as much in common as you once did. People change over time.

No, not if it was close. If it was close when they went in, it should stay close, unless one of them are a liar and pretended to care.
