Well, there was a Canadian company (Avro) that developed a saucer like flyer in the late 1940's... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avrocar The History Channel has several episodes that mention this vehicle.

There is also a local US company that has been developing a flying hover-car (Moller Skycar): http://www.moller.com/

Sikorsky has also flown a UAV that is saucer shaped recently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_Cypher

Hard to tell WHAT show you might have seen... hope some of these examples might be close.
