When people realize that the underlying reality of the world's great religions is one, revealed progressively throughout history through the teachings of the universal educators; that God is one, known by different names throughout history and understood differently by different cultures; and that humanity is one, like the waves of one ocean, the leaves of one branch, the fruits of one tree, we will know how. Those are the fundamental requirements for unity.

Actually, Christianity has attempted several times throughout history. Their strategy was to kill all those that didn't believe. Eventually, by default, all people on planet earth would've had a universal religion.

haven't you noticed that every religion is constantly trying to make themselves that universal religion? mostly by killing everybody who disagrees with them? i think that's probably why it doesn't work. they won't any of them listen to each other. to me, it's quite obvious that religion and God are quite separate and that religion is something which is often a fine moral code (often not) but unfortunately follows a book or a script which is simply a load of fairy stories. i think that the reason we have so many religions is that there used to be far fewer but as people passed on the message, it became like chinese whispers. everybody had a different idea of what religion should be. i think religion is a load of rubbish which is actually harmful to today's society through their desire to kill each other. God is something which (although i don't believe in it) is marginally less ridiculous. still a load of tripe, but in a different way.
in short, i don't think we can have a universal religion and i definitely don't think we should. that's not to say i want to get rid of all the culture that goes with religion, but culture is different.

I'm betting the answers here deminstrate that you'll not get universal agreement.

I suspect It is the nature of humans to explore in different directions & religion is no different.
