Someone we know took her kid into school today, despite the fact that she'd been throwing up this morning. Is this right? Isn't there some kind of 48-hour rule regarding vomiting and diarrhoea?

I find it pretty selfish personally - passing round the germs like that! She seemed to find it amusing though! *shrugs*

i agree with you that if a child is showing obvious symptoms of being ill then they ought not be sent to school that day

the problem is that where both parents work (and we cant deny that society DOES push parents to go back to work asap whatever the age of the children) and we have employers who take a very dim view of anyone taking sick pay for themselves never mind for looking after their kids (the thinking is that if you take time off sick that you WANT the sack) then we are going to end up with kids taking their bugs to school and passing it around

isn't it time that we reviewed our own employer practices? isn't it better than someone who is ill stays at home and doesn't pass the illness around? never mind all the lack of concentration and mistakes that are made when you are aching all over from the flu?

Depends. Sometimes our son gets sick (vomiting) due to a high gag reflex in his throat (he can swallow something wrong and puck). So it also depends on if there is a temperature or not. Selfish? you don't know the situation. Now if this child NEVER throws up in the morning then the child should stay home. And yes there is a rule that your child shall remain home "if" they've had a fever. They have to be "free of fever" for at least 24 hours.

Not only is she passing potential germs around to other students, but what is the child actually learning here? That if she's sick here her mother isn't going to be there for her, that's a wonderful (sarcasm) lesson for a mother to teach her daughter. I know when I throw up (and I'm an adult) I don't feel like doing anything so I have no idea how the child is actually going to pay attention with a sore tummy. Shame on that mother.

They probably didn't want to look after little Jonathan all day when they don't have to. There is a general rule i believe that the child or indeed staff at school need to be 48 hours clear on symptoms.
Unfortunately some parents don't wish to spend this time with their kids.

I run daycare, and its my rule that there needs to be 24 hours between vomitting and coming to my house. It is very selfish of a parent to bring a child to school while they're sick.. But at the same time, if a child has a contagious illness, they're usually contagious 5-7 days before the illness shows itself, and that's when other people are more likely to contract the illness. Its not amusing to us parents of children with weak immune systems when other children show up to school with green snot and horrible coughs.

I think it depends on why the child threw up. My son has allergies and asthma sometimes just from the drainage in his stomach he will throw up in am no big deal not contagious. Also if parents have had issues with the school saying the child was truant when the child had medical issues documented by their doctor the school is VERY picky about attendance and it sometimes takes the kid having throw up on the secretary to get the point across that you don't just keep them home b/c you want to.

Most school have a rule about fevers & vomiting. Check with the school nurse for details. Ask your child to stay away from the sick child for a couple days. Some parents should have just gotten a puppy!

I think it depends. Some children make themselves sick to get out of school. I think the Mother will know if this is the case and not outsiders.

However, if it's a tummy bug, then the child should be at home. However the germs are usually passed around before the physically sickness happens.

The schools then need to encourage hand washing after toilet, but can you see all the children taking notice of that? Then there's pencils and door handles.................a vunerable child is bound to go down.

No way. The child should be kept at home for 48 hours after the last time it is sick. The whole point of this is to isolate the virus/germs so it doesn't go round the whole class.
Some people are just plain stupid.

If my children are sick the night before OR that morning I keep them home for at least 24 hours, and if thry are no better I keep them off for another 24 hrs - It's not fair to take them to school, incase they pass on whatever they have got to other children and when a child is ill all they want is their MUM or DAD.
