Hello i just adopted a 16 weeks old kitten 4 days ago and the previous owner said he had a cold and got treated with Antibiotics about 2 weeks ago. He is very playful, runs and eats a lot but his eyes seem to get worse. First it was only one eye which was halfways open .now both eyes seem pretty bad...i think he had/has the cat flu...why is it getting worse? Can he get blind? I think i should make an vet appointment asap, what do you think? I am also worried that my other cat which will be released from quarantine in 2 months will get infected . Is there still a risk after 2 months? Thanks

Where are you adopting this kitten from? An individual? You should have taken it to a vet as soon as you got it. This kitten could actually have feline leukemia which is not only deadly but highly contagious. It also could be FIV. Please get this kitten to a vet NOW. And in the future I highly suggest adopting cats and kittens from shelters that test for various diseases and only adopt out healthy animals. I bet your in for some seriously expensive vet bills due to a very sick kitten.

Responder below me - you're wrong. There are influenza viruses that cats have. They're not the same as humans but the are influenzas - like FIV, for example.

Upper respiratories do hang on a long time, he may not have been fully recovered and just relapsed.

Have him examined at the vets, you'll need to have him checked over anyway. FIV woulnd't be presenting like this even in a kitten a few months old. If it's not an upper respiratory, then the eye problems would be caused by either the calci virus (needs a prescription ointment from the vets) or the herpes virus (you can treat for that one on your own.)

The herpes virus can be got under control in a few days. Just get yourself a bottle of generic Lysine (also called L-lysine) from the vitamin section of the grocery store. A bottle of 60 pills costs $4 if generic. Crush a 250mg pill with the back of a spoon and put the powder on the kitten's food once a day for a week, then taper off to three times a week. If the cat has the herpes virus it'll start clearing up and you'll usually see improvement within 3 days. It's cat safe. If he doesn't have the herpes virus, lysine helps the immune system and the eyes anyway, so it won't hurt him. We use this on our cats when they start getting runny eyes and usually the eyes are clear in 5 days.

he has by the sound of it conjunctivitis a effect of some cat flu viruses. bath his eyes in warm saline water and get him to a vet he will need antibiotic cream for both eyes. If your other cat has been vaccinated against cat flu he will have some protection. unfortunately once a cat has had flu he carries it for life. they shed the virus under times of stress and other times of illness

Sounds like an upper respiratory infection. Please take him to the vet before he gets worse.
